Ideas what this is? its a really high pitched whine that some people cannot hear, and a clicking noise coming from the hdd. my sister has the same laptop with none of these problems.

Whining noise is generally the CPU, nearly every Core 2 Duo has it now so if you have said processor thats probably the issue. You can solve this by installing RMClock and disabling the lower sleep states. This will however lower your battery life.

The clicking is probably the harddrive removing the heads, this is generally a problem with your power managment software being too aggresive in disabling the harddrive when it is trying to read/write data.

cpu's dont make any noise. The whining noise some people hear is because of low grade parts used on the motherboard, like unproperly sealed capacitors and so forth.

The harddrive will make clicking noises, but usually when that happens the harddrive actuator arm is moving to the idle space on the harddrive.

If you are worried about your harddrive, download and install hdtune. It will let you see the S.M.A.R.T. values of your drive. If your drive has anything highlighted in red, I suggest replacing the drive.

thanks tron. thats why i dont really think its all these other problems that people are talking about...hers has the same everything, i checked, and mine both have sucked. its so aggravating knowing that one is perfect while the other is fine...thats why ill probably return it and try yet another laptop.

on a side note, it sounds like the whine goes away somewhat when its on powersaver mode.

Try running something that is very CPU intensive. For me the whine will always disappear when running at a significant load.

As for as returning the laptop, if you can its not a bad idea.Just pick up something you like thats relativly mainstream, the more models a company sells, the more R&D/money they can put into the design which limits how many problems you'll end up with. Also avoid the absolute cheapest models if you can.

I don't want to dissagree K-tron, but every laptop I have own in the last 8 or so years have whined. some more than other, but they all do it, and yes putting them underload gets rid of the noise.

I can hear very well, so maybe that is it.
