Is there any program that I can install on a USB key, boot from the USB key and then clone the internal hard drive to an external one?
Can this be done with Acronis, if so how?

I used Acronis True Image WD Edition, and it runs from inside windows.. no usb key/CD needed
After setting in windows, it will reboot and start the cloning process
dunno if it can work with other hdd, but I think if 1 of the drives is WD, you can use it ..
can be downloaded here -
Most of the newer ones can do this. GHOST 11 works fine for this (I use the corp edition, booting to WinPE), as does Acronis TI Home. There is a utility that will make a bootable USB key for you. The only thing is that it seems to be at USB 1.1 speed.

i also use acronis true image home edition... its great!

With ver 2009, under the Tools menu at the top of the home page there is a drop down selection to "Create Bootable Rescue Media". Follow the instructions to install the full version of ATI onto whatever Bootable Media device you have available on your computer. That's it, you are good to go. -
Just to point out that Acronis True Image 2009 and older have some issues with Windows 7.

I boot Linux in Recovery Mode or from the Live CD and use 'dd if=<src> of=<dest> bs=4k' to do a block-for-block clone, or 'ntfsclone' to clone partitions 'ntfsclone /dev/sda1 -O /dev/sdb1'. Works great. There's got to be a USB version.

Thanks everyone. As crayonyes said, there was no need to create a bootable USB key.
Acronis True Image can clone the running hard drive by rebooting Windows. Worked like a charm. -
That's why use the 2010 version which is out.. works like magic and i also had no issues with 2009 one so its not bad.
