I drop some coffee on my laptop, like 20-30 cc over the keyboard and mouse pad. I tried to clean it and had it off for a while. It seems ok so far. The keyboard is tricky to dismount. Any recommendations? (apart of "don't be so stupid next time").
    Thanks.

\sorry, i don't have any recommendations for cleaning up but i have a different kind of suggestion: never have any liquid around your laptop. Just force yourself to remember that. Took me some time but now as soon as i walk near my laptop with a glass of water i automatically walk away or am careful to put the glass down somewhere NOT near my laptop.

woah, that was a close call, it could have been a lot worse. If your computer is working fine and you cleaned up your keyboard to a spot free shine you should be ok.

If your coffee drinking antics near your laptop can't be avoided, you could try getting some plastic over your keyboard to keep liquids off it for good, and to make it easy to clean; it's what they do in the hospital where I work.

How long ago was the coffee spilled on it? If it was less than 24 hours, I'd suggest you let your laptop sit for a while so that any remaining liquids inside it dry out so you don't short circuit your laptop. Just in case.

I work all day in my PC and I can't go through the day without a couple of coffee cups, so thanks Sepandee for your suggestion, but it wont work.
Thanks Lt. Glare, I'll turn it off now, just in case.

If there was sugar in your coffee, you should really open up your notebook and clean it with a damp cloth and leave it off for at least 24 hours.

Get a coffee cup with a lid ;) I have a nice mug that takes a lot of work to spill out of.

    That's a good idea Pitabread.
Coriolis, do yo really think the "dried sugar" might be a problem? I don't think it is so easy to dismount the keyboard, and then clean the key connections.
    Thanks.

Sugar is carbon, and carbon is a conductor. You really need to get the keyboard out and give it a good bath and scrubbing then a good rinse in clean water. There is usually one ribbon cable which is held into a socket and can be released by either lifting up a part with a small screwdriver or there is a wedge-like part which needs to be moved out. If you can provide a photo we can advise better.

All of the above is very sound advice

I do not recommend you leave it to chance. Not like a certain someone I know who spilt half a cup of squash, sat their watching it seep in and then carried on like normal :p

Thanks guys, I'll try to clean it up.
Still, sugar is a glucoside (carbohydrate) and it cannot ionize, so it actually does not conduct electricity.
    Thanks again.

You should go into Microsoft Word or Notepad, or any other text editor, and carefully test all your notebook keys to make sure none of them malfunction. For instance, "water damage" (or in this case, "coffee damage") may cause a key to stop working entirely, or may "fuse" two keys together, so when you type an "F" for example, you'll get "FC" or "FK," or some combination of the F with another key. If that happens, you'll need a new keyboard.

Also test to make sure the escape, F1-F12 keys, Windows Key, arrow buttons, alt, control, shift, etc. all work.
