I can get the chassis design for a barebones. it's got the 945P chipset, so it 'should' be able to run a Merom, but probably can't unless there is a BIOS update. the Compal website ( www.compal.com) isn't loading anything for me, just a blank white page.

anyhow, being I have easy access to it, I wonder if I might take an interest in it if it's C2D capable.

It does run Merom. You just need the new BIOS in it first. It's nearly identical to my machine, and I'm running a Core 2 Duo as you can see.

thanks Pita! were you able to oc the GPU much? in the review I read here on NR, they said that it doesn't perform the same as several others, being that Compal downclocks it some. that was obvious by how poorly it scored in 3DMark05. actually surprised me since I've seen better.

Just like Pita, i'm running one with a core2Duo as well. I believe that starting at bios version 104B merom is supported for the HEL80 ...

No, I haven't been able to overclock it a lot. I think the graphics memory they put in it is sub-standard. The Asus A8JS and A8JP both perform a bit better because of their clocks. I'm not disappointed with the performance though. The Compal was more configurable and was more what I wanted than the Asus when I was buying though. Depends on what your priorities are. It's not the fastest gaming 14" around, but it's still a great machine as far as I'm concerned.
