I'm chatting right now with an HP technical support. The guy is saying that the Compaq 610 (Core 2 duo, Chipset: Intel GL960 or GM965) doesn't support SSD drives.

    Is he right?

I've put a Crucial C300 SSD into my ThinkPad X61 Tablet which uses the GM965 chipset.

I don't see any reason why an SATA SSD wouldn't work in a laptop which has an SATA hard drive bay. In the case of the X61T, the BIOS was artificially limiting the drive to SATA I speeds which would be ~150MB/s max but luckily someone modded the BIOS and fixed that for good. Or maybe the BIOS have the drive controller stuck in IDE mode which would also just reduce performance.

If the notebook in question can run Windows 7, has SATA2 connectivity and takes standard 2.5" HDD's, then I too cannot see why it won't work better with an SSD.

If tech support is just parroting the official line that the Compaq 610 only supports XP/Vista (whatever the case may be...), then technically, they're right. But if Win7 is working fully (and all the drivers are properly installed) then an SSD is the next upgrade for a more responsive O/S (will greatly increase 'snappiness').

My criteria would be Win7x64 with at least 8GB RAM - then an SSD's addition could be fully exploited by the platform - anything less and a newer system/platform is highly preferred.

    Good luck.

The laptop in question has vista business 32bit. I checked HP website and the compaq 610 was also sold with Windows 7. I guess that tech guy from HP said it is not compatible simply because HP never sold this laptop with an SSD drive.

    Guys thanks
