I have a Compaq M2105US M2000 series notebook that is several years old. It will not boot from AC adapter OR battery power. It will not even go through the post. When I push the on button it doesn't do jack-squat. No lights, no nothing.

I took it apart because i knew for a fact that the DC power board was bad. When i got it out, sure enough, the solder on one of the tabs from the plug body to the circuitboard had burnt up. I couldn't understand why this would prevent it from booting from battery though.

Then i looked at the processor face and noticed one of the six tabs on one of the resistors (or transistors or capacitors, not really sure what they are) had the same burnt-up solder tab as the power board did. it looked like it had sparked or something and had burned and cracked.

Is the processing unit needed for the bios to check the hardware, or even for the laptop to power on, or is it necessary for the bios to perform the hardware check? I can understand why this would keep it from booting up windows, but i would still think the laptop would actually power up...

side-note: OBVIOUSLY with the previously stated processor problem, i will need a new one, which brings me to my next question... the processor is a mobile AMD sempron 2800+, would i be able to put the AMD sempron 3000+ or 3300+ in with no problems, or would "undervoltage" or whatever cause a problem with it?

    Welcome to nbr,

Well can you post an image of the "burnt up processor"
It may sound very strange that the system would not boot from battery, But it makes sense.
If the cpu is damaged, which it most likely is, the system will not post. The Bios needs a processor in order for the system to actually power up. Without a working cpu, their is an open circuit, and the system will not power up.

Your upgrade question, well I dont know if you are going to be able to upgrade. I say this because chances are something else on the motherboard blew, in order to kill your cpu. You should try and remove the motherboard and look around for anything else burnt up. If something else is fried, it may be time for a new motherboard or a new system.

You can upgrade to any socket 754 mobile cpu you want. The 3700+ is the fastest you can upgrade to.

I very well remember that my motherboard powered on without a CPU and the heatsink fan also worked, but everything went dead after 5 seconds. No POST.
A CPU provides instructions. A motherboard should power on (lights on, fan spin) when it is switched on if the PSU works.

Mine was an Intel, your's AMD, so might be different.

    Thanks k-tron.

Any advice on where to check first on the motherboard? I really don't feel like checking the WHOLE thing.... that sounds like a big PITA...

Weired that your laptop switches ON without a CPU. Mine does not turn ON if either RAM or CPU is missing (no fan and no LEDs). I guess each system is different.

[email protected] the maintenance guide for your laptop can be downloaded from here I doesn't tell you how to repair your motherboard, but it has all the part numbers and show all the CPUs that works in your laptop.

    AMD Mobile Turion 64, ML-34 (1.80-GHz)
    AMD Mobile Turion 64, ML-30 (1.60-GHz)
    AMD Mobile Turion 64, ML-28 (1.60-GHz)
    Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ (1.80-GHz)
    Mobile AMD Sempron 2800+ (1.60-GHz)

The Sempron 3400+ is not listed, so may or may not work; Bios may not support it.
