Compaq Presario CQ61-324SA processor upgrade

Hello. I am going to ugrade processor in cq61-324sa laptop, original procesor is celeron T3000 and GM45 chipset, question is what processors is compatible with this laptop after bios upgrade to F23 version (current F14). Does this laptop support any quad core processors ? I think about Q9100 or X9100 eventually other ones depends of hardware capability. Thanks in advance. Sorry for grammar.

 

Are you sure your CQ61 has GM45 chipset? AFAIK those with single core Celly use GL40 chipset, but not sure about those with dual core Celly (like yours).

If it does have GM45 chipset, it can use 1066MHz FSB Core 2 Duos, e.g. T9900, T9800, T9600, T9550, T9400. If you a cooler laptop, look for P-series Core 2 Duos (25W TDP, 10W lower than T-series), like P9700, P9600, P9500, P8800, P8700.

I personally wouldn't go for Core 2 Quads as they require beefy VRM on the mobo, which I doubt your machine has. They're only used in the top end machines at that time.

If it has GL40 chipset, you're limited to 800MHz FSB (unless you do PLL mod which is a little bit complicated), e.g. T9500, T9300, T8300, T8100.

 

That says System profiler and benchmark (hardinfo) in "display) section
"Mesa DRI Mobile Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset" in other places "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset". What about X9100 processor this is dual core as well.

 

That doesn't tell if it really has GM45 chipset, my HP t5745 thin client (which has GL40 chipset) returns "Mesa DRI Mobile Intel(R) GM45 Express Chipset" and "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset" in hardinfo too. Unfortunately in Linux, there's no easy way to know for certain what chipset your Compaq really has, unlike in Windows where you have AIDA64, CPU-Z, Sandra, to name a few.

As for the X9100, be aware it has higher TDP (44W) so it's gonna run hotter. It's has unlocked multiplier (i.e. overclockable) but I don't think your laptop's BIOS supports that, which kinda defeats the purpose of having a Core 2 Extreme. It's cheaper than T9900 though (in fleaBay at least), and with undervolting (using RMClock, guide is here) you may be able to tame its heat. The BIOS should recognize the CPU since it's from the same Penryn family, though I'm not sure so it's your call.

But then again, I can't say for sure if your laptop indeed has GM45 chipset.

EDIT: Just found another CQ61 model with very similar spec to yours, and it does have GM45 chipset (GM45 comes with GMA 4500M HD instead of GMA 4500M). With that in mind, chances are yours should also have one, not 100% sure but very possible.

 

I just sent question to HP through FB so I wait for answer. I will let know how things going.

 

Given that the T3000 is a 800Mhz CPU, I would say that its a GL40 chipset.

A T8300 is a pretty massive upgrade, a T9500 should work, but on my experience lots of BIOS wont boot with them, and its just a 100Mhz upgrade from the T8300 and that one is a sure fire, dont it lots of times.

A Xanything wont be all that usefull.

If you can, find two 4GB DDR2 sticks, a cheapo SSD and it will fly, even those core2Duos where HDD limited and can be much more responsive than an HDD will allow them to be.

 

Thanks for all replies I contacted with HP but they said that this model is very old an they don`t have any upgrade details for it. I installed Windows and cpu z and it says that it is probably as OverTallman said gl40 (unfortunately ) So, I just bought T8300. and I`ll try ugrade this laptop. Many thanks once again

 

If its a generic internet machine, grab H264ify extension for your browser, it will get mp4 that your cpu/iGPU can decode with ease instead of the VP9 that is very heavy on the cpu, most likelly you go from choppy 720p to smooth FHD at less than 10% CPU usage.
