I just received my new Compaq V4000T today and was excited to install the 1GB stick of RAM I purchased from Newegg. However, when I went to install it, I noticed that the slot in the middle of the stick was a few millimeters off, enough that the stick would not fit into the slot.

I removed the exisiting one and compared the two and there was a noticeable shift of the slot to one side. Did I get the wrong RAM for the laptop, or do I need to return this stick and get a new one?

The RAM you bought is DDR, the V4000T uses DDR2 SODIMM's.

Yep, you got the wrong type of RAM; only older v4000s (non t-models) use DDR. Don't worry, though, a lot of people have been tripped up by this.
