    Hello all,

I have a Compaq nw8000 notebook and I'm looking at upgrading the hard drive. It currently has a 60 GB Hitachi 7200 RPM drive that only gets 29 MB/s average transfer rate using HD Tune.

I've read some threads here and it seems that the Samsung HM160HC is enthusiastically recommended. The only problem is, that my notebook has the 855PM chipset with the ICH4-M southbridge. Does anybody know if I'll run into the 48-bit LBA problem? I've searched and searched and I can't find anything to confirm whether this chipset has the 48-bit LBA problem.

Also, what about the Samsung HM121HC? Since it is under 137GB it wouldn't have a problem...but I can't find any benchmarks for that model.

    Thanks for the help!

The HM160HC is the only size for a single platter drive. They did not make a 80gb model.
The HM121HC uses two platters, and will be slower than your hitachi drive.
I do not know if you will have any LBA errors, I have a HM160HC in my dell inspiron 8500 and I think that has the intel 845 chipset, and it recognizes all 160gb.
If the system does not recognize the entire drive you can always partition it with a 130gb partition and say a 30gb partition.

Here is my review of the drive if you didnt read it already:

You can probably run into LBA issues.
Update your BIOS to the latest version. If the BIOS natively supports 48-bit addressing, then there should be no problem.
You need at least XP SP1 or higher.
Install the latest chipset drivers from intel.

I have the latest BIOS from HP, which is dated June 2006. Good review on the HM160HC, K-TRON. I wish I could find something definitive that will tell me whether the 855PM chipset has the problem or not.
