My gf just got a compaq laptop for xmas... and 2 months later the cd drive goes bad. She doesnt want to wait for the long times of warranty fixes plus they will just throw hers away and give a new one, she has files on there that she doesnt want to get rid of... backing up is an option but its just a hassle...
Is replacing a cd/dvd drive for a V2000 notebook pretty straight forward? Ive opened a couple laptops before but im not proficient at them. I do know my way around things.![]()

HP may just send you a new one if asked.

It's dead simple. You just have to unscrew one screw and the CD/DVD bay will slide straight out. You don't have to open up the entire laptop. If you look on the bottom of the notebook, the screws are all labelled with symbols for what they secure.
You should call HP anyway. I can't imagine they'd require you to ship the whole notebook back just for a faulty CD/DVD drive. They might diagnose the prob with you over the phone and decide to ship out the drive only. -
sweet, i saw that hehe, just wondering if it was as easy as it looked =) thanks toney

yeah... the cd/dvd drive in compaq v2000 is badly designed.. it's very fragile, don't hold the laptop by its sides.... coz when you do, you're actually lifting the cd drive instead.
but replacing it is pretty easy... and doing it doesn't void warranty.. i think -
holy crap, well yea her cd drive after about 2 months is smoked, like just clicks and doesnt read ANYTHING... but i just bought her a new drive from newegg and im gonna put it in tomorrow or whenever it gets here =P
