Hey, I have an old computer with a Pentium 4 2.8GHz and recently bought a laptop with a U2700 1.3GHz (The Acer Aspire Timeline). I looked up the passmark benchmark scores and the scores are 416 and 396 respectively. Youtube HD playback is fine on the Pent 4 but unwatchable on the U2700. Flash video is not gpu accelerated so the gpus don't matter in this case. How can this be explained? If the scores are so close to each other, what can be used to appropriately determine how well a CPU will work without actually buying a computer?

It really depends on what type of work is being done. The newer CPUs have better architecture and are optimized to do certain things better, one of them being HD video playback (also could be in conjunction w/ the codec used). I'm not sure how passmark benchmarks, but it probably is calculation based, hence the P4 would perform a bit better than the U2700 in say calculating digits of pi or running a mathematical simulation in MATLAB (though the difference wouldn't be much as the scores are within a few % of each other).

is more complete.
But it can be also your harddrive and or graphic card. I suppose you checked both CPU at max when playing video?
See if you can return the computer. -
Even by this chart, The difference is not that great. I checked when everything what idle.

Sorry for bumping, but I was just wondering what the best way is to compare processors in the future, besides for reading actual comparisons people post. Sometimes this doesn't work because there are no forum topics comparing a new and old processor such as a U2700 on a lappy and a Pent 4 2.8Ghz on my old desktop, you know?
