I have an Asus G1 with an Intel 3945ABG mini PCIe wireless adapter and I would like to upgrade to a wireless N card. Has anyone successfully done such an upgrade, and which card was used?

I currently upgraded to an Intel 5100AGN, but I'm getting random system freezes, in both Ubuntu and Windows XP, which makes me think there may be some hardware incompatibility. Asus does not have a whitelist/blacklist BIOS, so that's not it.

    Any help or ideas?

Has anyone upgraded the wireless adapter on their Asus G1?

I have tried 2 different Intel 5100 cards and an Intel 6200, and I get system freezes with all of them, only on this laptop. The cards work fine in other laptops.

Which mini PCI-e wireless N adapter works with the Asus G1?

What kinda card upgrade does Asus list primarily for that laptop and have you contacted them about what card to upgrade to? Those freezing would indicate incompatiblity with the card but have you looked at the card themselves and made sure they were not made for lenvo or some other laptops? Just cause it is a 5100 or 6200 doesn't mean it will work for your laptop it has to be a non specific card to work.

Where can I find a list of upgrades for this model? I have contacted them and they told me they only support the laptops in their original configuration and offered no list of recommended or compatible upgrades.

The network adapters I tried were not restricted models (for Lenovo, HP, etc). I tried them in other laptops, such as an Acer and a Dell, and they work fine.

I think it's pretty clear that the random system freezes are due to hardware incompatibility, as they happened in Ubuntu linux, Windows XP, and while using a live USB of Ubuntu. These different configurations rule out specific driver or software configuration issues.

All I want is to upgrade to a wireless N internal adapter since this is the only device holding my network back. Surely someone must have upgraded this on the G1 or similar laptop?

Asus wouldn't give an answer, and nobody seemed to know what might work. Finally, after lots of trial and error, I can say that the Intel 4965AGN adapter works well with the Asus G1, in both Ubuntu and Windows XP. Maybe this will save someone some time and frustration.
