Happy New Year to everyone and thanks to everyone who has read my guide.

I made a quick little update today, changing my recommended browser to Chrome and recommended office suite to Libre Office and fixed the graphic.

I would like to make a recommendation for cleaning software...

BleachBit - Removes all the unnecessary files in your computer and cleans up cache, etc. Can further clean up Firefox, IE and Chrome cache. And you can delete these files securely, or even overwrite the empty part of the hard drive with PRNG-generated numbers so that your old data cannot be accessed anymore.

But overall, good guide for a beginner/intermediate computer user. Kudos!

    Thanks! Glad you like it.

I hope to update the guide once Windows 8 comes out. I will also remove the old Vista links as well.

Thanks for the kind words and recommendation. I checked out BleachBit and it seems like a good piece of software. It seems pretty similar to CCleaner, but it does have some nice extra features regarding securely deleting files.

I disagree with #5 (Set power profile to Balanced) on Neahlem or Sandy Bridge-based Intel laptops. Setting the power option to balanced effectively disables turbo boost. Secondly it also causes CPU throttling because the operating clock of the CPU is reduced. For example instead of Firefox utilizing 5% CPU usage it might consume 25-30% to perform the same tasks. This is a result of the CPU clocking up to meet the processsing demand of the software. Had you put the power plan to "High performance" in the beginning, no throttling would occur.
