    Hi all,

    I have the following questions that I wish someone will answer me for:

    1- What part is responsible for the computer / laptop speed is it the CPU Proccessor or the RAM of the computer?

    2- My current computer cpu is: 2.66 Ghz ... it's in Ghz ... the laptop I'm going to buy is 1.6 Mhz ... is there a big differance between them?

    Thanks in advance,
    zeid

    1. Both. But the amount of RAM has a more significant influence on the speed.

    2. Are you sure its 1.6 Mhz or 1.6 Ghz?

    A lot of things affect the performance of a laptop including the cpu, RAM, HDD, graphics card etc...There is no one part resposible. Ofcourse depending on your uses you can probably get a powerful cpu or if you are into gaming, video editing etrc then you need a powerful graphics. Generally any modern day cpu will do just fine for general use. But be sure to get atleast 1GB of RAM and a 5400rpm or faster hard dive.
    Clock speed is not the only factor when it comes to processor performance. The architecture of the processor has a big impact...current Core/Core 2 Duo, Pentium M & AMD cpus are more effeicient and dont need high clock speeds to perform. A 1.6GHz Core Duo will easily outperform a 2.8GHz Pentium 4.

    Are you sure it is not 1600 MHz? This would equal 1.6 GHz.

    There must be some mistake. Its probably 1.6 Ghz.

    Yeah, my guess is that there is a typo in the literature or advertisement for the unit. If not, the laptop must be older than me........ ;)

    Even the Zilog Z80, which started life in 1976, ran faster than 1.5MHz. The 6302, of the same era, ran a bit slower but I think it did more per clock cycle (nothing new!).

    Zeid, do you have any details or a link to the proposed computer?

    John

    Not intending to derail this thread, but my life started before '76.:laugh:

    As for the Zilog Z80, it is interesting to find that either it or it's counterparts were used in the TRS-80. I have been behind quite a few of them back in the day. I remember being mesmerized by them, even when they were becoming commonplace and dated. :D

    Does it give you a brand name & model number? We should be able to verify the specifications if you supply the above info.

    They meant 1.6Ghz.

    1.6Mhz=1,600,000 cycles/s
    1.6Ghz=1,600,000,000 cycles/s

    As mentioned above, the architecture of the CPU affects how much work each of those cycles does. If the 1.6Ghz laptop is a Intel Core Duo, it will be more powerful than a 2.66Ghz Pentium 4 desktop, especially in multitasking.
