    hello there,

I'm trying to upgrade my cpu from 1.6 ghz to something higher, but i am confused as to what type of cpu i need. I've done some research online, used some system scanners. a program called pc wizard 2008 showed that my cpu is a Socket 479 mBGA.

so my questions are as follows:
    1) what is the difference between mBGA and mPGA?
    2) should i stick with mBGA or are they interchangeable?
    3) could i use a socket 478 mBGA CPU by any chance?
    4) is a socket 479 mBGA CPU even upgradeable at all?

i just need some clarifications if anybody can shine some light on this for me i would really appreciate it. i'm really looking forward to upgrading my 700M as soon as possible.

    ken

You need a PGA Socket 479 processor with a 400MHz FSB. The only processor in this category is Pentium M and associated Celerons. The fastest processor you can get is the Pentium M 765. Also:

    Pentium M 1.3 1300 1024 400
    Pentium M 1.4 1400 1024 400
    Pentium M 1.5 1500 1024 400
    Pentium M 1.6 1600 1024 400
    Pentium M 1.7 1700 1024 400

    Pentium M 710 1400 2048 400
    Pentium M 715 1500 2048 400
    Pentium M 725 1600 2048 400
    Pentium M 735 1700 2048 400
    Pentium M 745 1800 2048 400
    Pentium M 755 2000 2048 400
    Pentium M 765 2100 2048 400

    Celeron M 310 1200 512 400
    Celeron M 320 1300 512 400
    Celeron M 330 1400 512 400
    Celeron M 340 1500 512 400

    Celeron M 350 1300 1024 400
    Celeron M 360 1400 1024 400
    Celeron M 370 1500 1024 400
    Celeron M 380 1600 1024 400
    Celeron M 390 1700 1024 400

These are all the processors you can use. Period.

about having an mBGA is it ok to use something with an mPGA? or i should just stick to mBGA types?

since what i have is mBGA i'm unsure about using a mPGA type cpu; how does that work?

Oops. I lied. You can't upgrade your processor.

A BGA chip doesn't have pins and is meant to be soldered to a motherboard in SFF computers and embedded devices. I didn't think that the 700M was SFF enough to have a BGA chip and that PCWizard was just babbling, but I just double checked the service manual and the chip is indeed soldered.

The only way to upgrade the processor is with some REAL hardcore soldering or by replacing your motherboard.

You will need to purchase a mPGA processor; one with pins.

Also, I'd recommend you undervolt your computer now and if after if you decide to do the processor upgrade, because this computer's CPU heatsink is kinda in a tight spot.

My results for full load after undervolting: 80C (throttling) -> 63C

Also, there are 33 screws between you and your CPU upgrade. :p

Like I didn't say earlier, I have the same computer as you and have upgraded from a 1.7Ghz-1.8GHz processor.

You need a processor with pins.

Here is real proof; I took out my motherboard and took some photos of the motherboard and socket.

    These are 2MB photos....

Close up of socket, look at this photo only if you want to save bandwidth!!!
(click on thumbnail for larger image or here if you want to avoid advertisements -> right-click 'Save as..')

The bottom left-hand side of the socket clearly says, 'mPGA479 SOCKET'.

    Other irrelevant photos.
