Hey I want to add a second SSD to my notebook which is an HP Spectre 14 that I've had for a while. I can't tell if I'm going for a 0.85 inch or a 2.5 inch SSD, or what the difference between the two sizes is. For example, I'm looking to pick up one of these two models:

    http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Electronics-mSATA-0-85-Inch-MZ-MTE120BW/dp/B00HT2RNSO

    http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Intern...16204277&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+evo+2.5+inch

Is the 0.85 inch the mSATA? Are there no mSATA SSDs that are 2.5 inch?

This is the SSD that is currently in the laptop: Samsung PM800 128GB mSATA SSD Review - Samsung Quietly Releases another Top Tier SSD | The SSD Review

No mention whether it is a 2.5" or a 0.85" SSD. Also can't find any resource that tells me what to look for when buying a second SSD for the laptop.

    Help is appreciated
    thanks

I would recommend that you look inside to see if there is any spare slot or whether the only upgrade option is to replace the existing SSD with one of higher capacity.

None of the listings for this model I can find mention a second storage drive option.

A standard notebook HDD/SSD size is 2.5" with a 9.5mm z-height. Newer models have become even slimmer with 5mm and 7mm z-height form factors for use in the thinnest notebooks currently available.

mSATA is a completely different standard that stands on it's own. No 'inch' dimensions needed.

Here is a visual between mSATA, 2.5" SSD and a 3.5" HDD.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. This is what it looks like on another person's machine:

I believe it is this product... Review: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB mSATA SSD | Custom PC Review

I'm rather illiterate when it comes to hardware so I can't tell what sort of specs these are. Also, you say that mSATA has no inch specifications, but this one for example says it's 0.85":

    http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Electronics-mSATA-0-85-Inch-MZ-MTE120BW/dp/B00HT2RNSO

Do you mean they only come in 0.85" and it's redundant to put that in the description of an mSATA SSD?

    Yeah, simply redundant.

I used to think that mSATA comes in one size but there are two sizes near the bottom of this page. The normal size (which is that used by the Samsung mSATA SSDs) is 51mm long and 30mm wide. 0.85" (21.6mm) doesn't match either of those dimensions. The actual dimensions (5.1 x 0.4 x 3 cm) shown on the Amazon.ca page are correct.

mSATA is different from mSATA-mini, just like that link says.
