I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 right now that came with two sticks of 512mb. The 1GB of memory just isn't kicking it in Vista. I installed SIW to see what exactly was inside of my notebook. It shows two 512mb sticks of PC5300 ram as I had expected.

It turned up something surprising though - the program says that I can have up to 4GB of RAM, while Dell and Crucial both tell me that 2GB is the maximum. Is the 4GB limit correct? I'd love that to be the case as more than 2GB would make an incredible difference.

    Here's some screencaps from SIW:

If Dell itself says that 2GB is limit, then 2GB is probably the limit.

Of course, if other e1505 owners who have tried 4GB disagree; well, Dell's lying to you ;)

Not sure about the 955xm, but the 945GM/PM/GMS all support 4GB of memory and the 940GML supports 2GB. Since the 940 chipset only supports Celeron processors and you have a Duo Core, you probably have the 945 chipset which does support 4GB.

Dell is just going to the lowest figure and covering their asses. I have the 945GM (or PM, I forget) on my Acer and just upgraded to 3GB. Remember you need a 64 bit OS to utilize all 4GB otherwise you will only see about 3.25GB.

Have tried 4gb, no dice. The E1505 only recognizes 2Gb of memory.

The chipset might support 4GB memory but the motherboard may not. I'd not be surprised if it doesn't support more than 2GB, if that's what Dell says.

highly unlikely that you would notice any difference between 2 GB and >2GB.
