I have an external hard drive with usb 2 and esata, and for the life of me cant seem to get it work with esata. I think my two y usb cable and my dc jack to usb aint powering the hard drive enough or my esata cable is the one messed up? well anyone have any ideas for me to get it to work? and an external power source to plug to wall then esata to my htpc. I just need esata to transfer my movies to my external to use for my laptop when im out and about.

does it work if you connect the USB port only?
Is it detected by the laptop as an external USB or eSata device? (see if you can see it in the device manager)

yea it works fine in usb.

just esata doesn't detect it. even in device manager wont find it.

You are plugging in the eSATA cable and then the USB cable(s), right?

eSATA will not give any power to the drive on it's own.

well turns out the hdd pooped on me. Doesn't boot or get recognized by both laptop and desktop and doesnt spin. :(

Well first my desktop hdd is dying very very slowly
and now my external hdd has died :(

wel at least I can find an excuse to finally put an ssd in my desktop and possibly get a bigger ssd for my laptop and rma the external hdd.
