I've just converted a laptop from CCFL to LED as the original screen is broken and CCFL's are hard to get hold of these days.

I have an issue though. When the laptop boots up the screen goes dark after a few seconds. I can see the password login screen so I know the cable is ok to the back of the screen.

I have the power for the Inverter plugged into the new power connector for the new LED Screen.

I have no issues when the old screen is plugged back in (other than its fooked

    Any ideas anyone?

    Cheers.

Oddly, it works OK in safemode?

Seeing how your post indicates that you changed the entire screen (and not just CCFL), it might be possible that the OS doesn't recognize the display properly in regular mode and needs a re-install.
If you use Windows, have you tried uninstalling the monitor itself in Device Manager and allowing the OS to do it?

You could also try running Ubuntu LiveCD and see how the screen behaves in there.

    Thanks for your reply.

Yeah I replaced everything, CCFL and replaced the inverter with the LED power connector.

I uninstalled the graphic card and then let Windows re-install it - Ill try the monitor as well, thanks.

Hmmm, now all i get is a white screen when windows loads up after re-installing the gfx card again..

Looks like its a driver issue, works ok until i re-install the driver.

When you uninstall GPU drivers, make sure to clean up the registry afterwards.
You can do that using Ccleaner and DriverSweeper (in Safe Mode).
Also make sure to download the latest drivers for your GPU ... or at least ones you think might work.
Install drivers after a fresh boot into Windows.

    Hi,

The drivers that I downloaded from the laptop manufacturers site seem to be older than the ones that were installed, and both of them result in the same issue.

Do I need to use both of those programs to clean the registry?

Its an Intel Chipset 4 for the GFX.

    Thanks.

    I think Ccleaner will suffice.
Anyway... have you tried booting the laptop with a Ubuntu LiveCD to see if the problem persists there?
You could do it with a USB stick too.

As for the drivers... go to Intel's website and download the drivers from there.
Uninstall the existing drivers, run Ccleaner, clean up the registry, restart into Safe Mode, run Ccleaner again and clean the registry, followed by restarting to regular mode and installing the downloaded drivers (using Administrator privileges) ... and see how it behaves.

Try the Ubuntu LiveCD... and if the problem is gone there (try to download Ubuntu drivers as well), then its possible that you simply might need a Windows re-install.

    Thanks.

No I havent as I havent been home since I posted this thread. Im going home tomorrow but only to sleep between shifts, so its going to be Thursday or Friday before I could try Ubuntu. It is fine under safe mode so must be a driver issue.. If I had a spare hard disk i'd put it in the laptop and do a Windows install to see if it made a difference. I might just try the driver re-install with using ccleaner and getting the drivers from the Intel site.

If I may ask, what laptop did you make the replacement on and how did the inverter fit?

As for your issue, it could be because of the brightness settings in Windows - CCFL and LED receive the levels differently, so whatever setting you had before doesn't work for the new backlight. Maybe try deleting the monitor driver (not the display adapter, but the "Monitor" device) in Device Manager in safe mode, then let Windows re-install it...

Huh, that's weird... In Device Manager, under the "Monitors" category you can find your display driver (in my case it's Generic PnP Monitor). Try checking "Show hidden devices" under View menu...

Yeah, there are no settings for brightness in Safe Mode...

Just checked - the Monitor category is also missing in Safe Mode...

Flash light just reflects off the screen and makes seeing the mouse point impossible really.
I have another monitor at home (post above yours) so im going to give that a try.
