I would normally search for this, but seems the search engine is down. Im looking to buy a Dell Vostro 1500, and it starts at 1.4. Should I upgrade it? Whats the difference? Will I notice a difference? Will I not be satisfied with a 1.4. Any help would be good. Thanks.

Tell us what you will be doing with the computer also tell us the cost of each upgrade (I am too lazy to check right now)?

Price wise not worth it for 200Mhz 8.75% increase in speed will not be perceptible with out a stop watch. Most games the GPU is what will matter not CPU. 1.4 is more than enough for Music, office and all basic. Honestly anything 1.4 can't do well 1.6 won't do much better.

Have you considered DeLL outlet, if on a budget you could stretch your dollar. Last night I found some Vostro 1500's with 8600m GT and one had a 2.4Ghz and one had a 2.5Ghz for under $700. They come with 1 year warranty. Those CPU's you will notice the difference and that is the best GPU available on that model.

OK it is likely not very old I mean how long has the T9300 been in the Vostro 1500? So for some reason likely not the CPU as I don't think they would refurb with that CPU if an option. Yea it is not exactly new. With most electronics if there is a manufacturing defect it will usually present in 1 year after that even a new could fail it is just as much a roll of the dice. I have seen more threads from people saying how happy they where, how it looked brand new down to protective plastic in certain areas. I mean they make them (sort of) so trust me they can fix them up. I have 9 year old DeLL if a notebook is going to fail in a year or three it is luck of the draw not whether you bought refurb or new. I am only suggesting because you asked about relatively low end CPU's. Similar configured would cost $1,351 vs $699. If I didn't have that much I would consider saving $651, maybe that is just me. Some of these were returned in 30 days for many reasons even maybe they decided to get a m1530? I mean it doesn't mean there was some big problem DeLL just can't sell it as new. It is all about your feeling on this subject not mine. Good luck.

1.4 GHz is really not a whole lot of power... for $75, I'd disagree with Powerpack and suggest you do the upgrade to 1.6. Unless you find a better deal on a refurbished model, which I'd recommend as well.

I would have to say that a 1.4Ghz dual core is rather weak. I would look into a 2.0Ghz socket P processor, and no less. Sure you are going to use your laptop for just work, but its going to be real slow using heavy software like the adobe cs3 suite, or any kind of cad software.
