Would a 1.4 ghz Core 2 Duo be on par with a 1.73 ghz Pentium M?

Is there any reason to get a 2.0+ Core 2 Duo if you just want to play games on your computer?

I mean, it's so much cheaper to get the 1.4 Core 2 Duo than the 2.2, and if I'm just gaming, I don't need an Uber processor, right??

nope, any core/ core 2 is fine. the 1.4 CORE 2 should be faster, not by a ton though. P4 is still a min requirement for pretty much any game today, and Core 2's are rarely even a reccomended, maybe on crysis and such. That should be more than enough.

For gaming you dont need a very fast cpu... any core2 should be ok... but you need an extremely fast gpu if you want play new game... at least a 8600gt

True, games depend far more on the GPU, so you should invest your cash where it matters; and on the non-upgradable parts.

Well it really depends on the game. Games depend on both CPU and GPU. Crysis,a rather new technology filled game, requires the fastest CPUs and the best gpus out there. Roughly, for every ghz my AMD 5000+ BE is at i get 15 more fps. Older games such as counter-strike 1.6, or warcraft III, and starcraft do not require such a high end cpu. Supreme commander definitely does and maybe valve Source engine based games as well. Flash mini games? no problem.

The core duo 2 is probably faster than the pentium m despite the 330mhz difference because of its many architecture enhancements and fixes. It is also dual core where as the pentium M is not so in multi threaded apps it would be somewhere in the vicinity of two times faster. In single threaded apps the core duo 2 is slightly faster. Most games are single threaded except for newer games like supreme commander and crysis.

So... between a 1.83 ghz core 2 duo and a 1.6 ghz core 2 duo there is 100$ involved, you're saying it's not worth the 100$ to upgrade if I'm just going to play games?

I have used BOTH of those Core 2 Duos and I have noticed NO difference between 1.6 and 1.83 GHz.

    It is NOT worth $100.
