As some of you may know, Apple is now offering a deal aimed at students in their higher education. At a base price of $1249 with an iPod nano included, the Mackbook is an attractive choice and I have been considering it for some time until recently. Although the offer expires on Sept. 16, there are rumours that Apple may upgrade the Macbook and Macbook Pro to the Core 2 Duo platform. Since then, I've done some more research. One site says the Mackbook's motherboard cannot accomodate such an upgrade. Another website says otherwise.

As for me, I believe that Apple will upgrade their laptop processors when they debut their consumer product announcements in October. Why would they upgrade before? What I would like to know is whether Apple will offer the C2D before Sept. 16, whether the C2D will raise the Mackbook's price, and whether the C2D has a higher watt-per-clock ratio.

There are rumors that you cannot order the Mini in large quantities until after Labor Day, which points to a Mini upgrade. Do't be suprised to see the MBP upgraded at the same time, without an announcement. A minor update in processors does not warrant an announcement neccesarily. I do not believe however that the MacBooks will get a similar upgrade. The problem is with Apple you never know until it is actually out. This way they don't announce something and then everyone has to wait around 3 months while they scramble to get it out the door, thus cannabilizing current sales.

I know I did not exactly answer your question, but look at it this way. If you get a CoreDuo, you are geting a great machine that is very fast. Merom is not one of those I wish I had waited upgrades.

I've heard several rumours suggesting that the Macbook Pros may get the Core 2 Duo upgrade, to be announced at Apple Expo Paris next month. Unfortunately, I've also heard that the Macbook may not get the upgrade, so as to differentiate the MBP product.

    I have several more questions:

At this point, are there any REAL facts?

Does the C2D have a higher watt-per-clock ratio than the CD?

Assuming the Mackbook will recieve the C2D, can consumers expect the same price?

    No, no real facts.
No. But the C2D does have a higher performance per watt ratio than the CD.
Yes, they price should be the same.
And there is only the last K MACBOOK. Not two of them. Sheesh.

Real facts? With Apple rumors? Are you kidding? It is all heresay. I can tell you that it is unlikely they will upgrade the MacBook or MBP before that iPod deal is up, but once again you never know.
