    Hi,

I am planning to buy a new laptop with Core 2 Duo T7200 processor.
I want to know if T7200 processor is 64 bit processor. I tried googling, the answers i found said it says it can support 32 as well as 64 bit.

I will appreciate any pointers which can tell me if thsi processor is 64 bit 0r 32 bit

    Thanks
    Amit

It is 64 bit and can run BOTH 32 and 64 bit programs.

    It's like a Wireless G network--able to talk to G AND B devices.

All Core 2 Duo Merom chips are 64bit enabled, and the 64 bit it is an extension of the 32bit chips. So it can run both 32 and 64 bit softwares. You'll need a 64bit OS to take advantage if you want to run 64bit stuffs.

But remember, at least Windows XP 64-bit has very poor support for 32-bit programs.
You can't even tell which 32-bit program will work on it...

Everything said in this thread is true. However, asaxena, I would stay away from any Vista 64-bit operating system for now, because the drivers are relatively rare, and a lot of programs won't be compatible.

If you need a 64-bit operating system, go with XP Professional x64. It's been around for longer, and definitely has a much broader array of drivers and compatible software than any Vista 64-bit OS.

Switching to Vista 64 in a few months would be smart. It'll give software companies a chance to upgrade their drivers and for Microsoft to patch to Service Pack 1 and maybe tweak with the compatibility.

Or, you can just go for Vista 32-bit, which is basically compatible with any software run on XP.

64-bit processors cannot be put to full use until 64-bit supported programs are out though like the windows 64 bit enabled os such as vista 64-bit or 64 bit XP it will take some time for programs to take full advantage of the the chips 64 bit capability but having a 64 bit enabled procssor is quite useful atleast for the future and goes a little bit in futureproofing your system even if not a whole lot

Yes, in some cases the 64-bit will perform twice as much as the same processor on 32-bit,but again lack of 64-bit support in many areas is a big problem.
    (Like the firewall software)
