So, as I mentioned months ago, I was always interested in upgrading this laptop's CPU from the T5550 to something a bit stronger. I think I've settled on the T9300, as I've found some places on eBay that offer it for a good price. However, when I check the specs of both the T5550 versus the T9300, there are some differences I need to check with before I go and order one.

Specifically, the Manufacturing Technology between them is different, and so is the VID Voltage Range. The Package Type is the same (Micro-FCPGA), however. If I order the T9300, it should work in this laptop in place of the T5550 despite these differences, correct?

Yeah the t9300 will work in your 6860. Many many people have preformed the very same upgrade. It works perfectly and gives you better temps as well as a faster speed

Excellent. I just needed to make sure before I order one and find out when I go to upgrade OMG IT WON'T FIT/WON'T WORK/CAUSED MY LAPTOP TO DIE or whatever else one can imagine.

Just a glimpse: why won't you opt straight to T9500 instead of T9300? The price different should be marginal between these two.

I haven't had much luck in finding a T9500. The ones I have are selling them in China, of which I'm a bit wary of buying from...

Tigerdirect.ca only has the T8100, Newegg.ca has no Mobile CPUs. No idea where else to go.

The T9300 is a VERY worthwhile upgrade over the T5550. If the T9500's are too much of a hassle to find, I wouldn't sweat the difference.

I went for a T8300 - T9300s were still too expensive for only 100 MHz and 3 MB L2 cache more.

The Manufacturing Technology difference is one of the reasons to upgrade - the T9300 is built on the 45nm Penryn core, which adds new instructions and has a higher performance than the 65nm Merom T5550.
And since smaller processes require less voltage, that explains the VID Range difference. It also translates into a cooler CPU that uses less battery power.

It'll be a drop-in upgrade, and your system will love you for it.

Yes, if you find a good price for T8300, go for it. I don't know if you will notice a huge difference, if any, between T8300 and T9300. The price difference used to be a lot between the two CPUs in ebay, but now it's less. I think you should buy whatever your pocket allows you to. I went for the T9300 because I could at the time, and I did notice a difference even in games (I had T7300 before).
    Good luck

Realistically, you'll probably never notice the difference between the ES and OEM versions. I would only get the non-ES if it were significantly cheaper; I got mine for $250, which is around the same price most ES versions sell for.

I hesitate to go with the ES version - even if they're 100% rock-solid stable, they're not meant for resale.
I stuck with a retail/OEM CPU for mine.

Thanks for the input, guys. I wanted it now, but I'll wait couple of days to make my mind :)
