I am wondering how big the difference in performance is?? I am not going to be doing anything really extensive just general college things but i want my computer to be pretty fast for those tasks.

So is it worth it to go with the Core 2 or is it not worth the higher price.

The Core 2 Duo will yield a noticeable performance gain. Its really the bread and butter of Intel's mobile line-up; if you're buying Intel, chances are its a C2D. Anything less from Intel is not worth it. Its a worthwhile buy, though.

Yes, I would go for Core 2 Duo too. Can be found in cheap laptops and offers noticable performance boost over Core Duo or Dual Core.

To OP the C2D can usually be had at a good price so worth trying to get. If you find a notebook in budget with Pentium Dual Core better for you than any C2D. Get it, basically it is a C2D with some L2 cache disabled (same chip, same production line). So for everyday use not much difference if clocks are close.

You want to know the real difference? Can't tell you but can guess. Remember the only substantial difference is L2. 1MB vs 2MB/4MB. 2MB vs 4MB is from 0% to 10% max. Avg. 3.5%.

Well the difference between 1MB vs 2MB will be a little more as adding more and more cache yields diminishing returns. So from 1MB to 2MB is more substantial than 2MB to 4MB even though the ratio is the same.

So my guess is, at the same clocks, 0% to 15% max, avg. 6% to 7%. Hope that helps! ;)
