Well i have a black dell xps m1330 without the nvidia geforce 8400m gs so i dont have any heat problems and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to replace the old t6400, by installing a Core 2 Extreme X7900 ? i have seen many do it and was wondering if it would work ? i have the latest drivers and my laptop doesnt even get hot so i don't think heat would be an issue as i dont have the 8400m gs.
What do you guys think ? i wont be gaming unless i buy a vidock 4 !
Its just that i have allways wanted a core 2 extreme since i was little and i think its time to get them while there cheap !:hi2:
Or i could buy a brand new laptop ? but i really want a lappy with a core 2 extreme since nothing makes your friends jealous then seeing that Core 2 Extreme case Badge !
Or should i buy a new laptop i don't want a desktop since im in college and i like lugging my computer around where i go![]()
i have $1000 to spend but much rather spend much less i see on Amazon they have a xps m1730 for less than $500 working and i have allways wanted on of those which should i do ??
:hi2: Keep Happy![]()

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
1) Unless making your friends jealous is worth however much an X7900 costs, I wouldn't do it. It's just a poor value CPU basically no matter how you look at it.
1a) You could also just buy a C2E badge without the CPU
2) If you are looking for more CPU/GPU power, you should definitely look at a new laptop. Even the cheapest IB and HD4000 laptops these days will be faster than an M1330 maxed out (say X9000 and 8400M).
3) Don't buy an M1730. They all have the bad Nvidia GPU. -
T9300/T9500 wouldn't be half bad either.

Pretty much what Commander Wolf said. About the only time the X7900 would make sense versus buying a new laptop is if you were totally CPU-limited and were only willing to spend $80 or so. In which case it could deliver a nice CPU boost for a lower cost than a new laptop. Though that is looking at economically, and without the prestige factor of the "Extreme" label, and the fun of overclocking it.
If you do get the X7900, be sure to check out the ThrottleStop Guide here at Notebookreview so you can overclock it. No point in getting an Extreme and not overclocking it at least somewhat! -

Can't you do that pm965 socket mod to use pm45 chipset cpus like the x9000 at 800mhz fsb and then use the unlocked multipliers to still OC? pretty sure its not too difficult.
i mean that would be the thing to do rather than get a silly x7900
right? idk i dont really work on laptops anymore. -
The X9000 is better since it's a smaller process (45nm vs. 65nm), and you get 50% more L2 cache. However, last I checked (last summer), it was also two times as expensive - the X7900 (non-ES and from North America) could be had for $80, but the X9000 would go for $180 or so. A quick eBay check indicates these days it's closer to $90 for the X7900 and $200 for the X9000 (and that may be ES and not North America; didn't check). So for that price difference, I think the X7900 makes a lot more sense than the X9000.
For the overclocking, the Dells from that era won't let you do it in the BIOS. That's why ThrottleStop is necessary. Perhaps you could work around it with a socket mod, but IMO it would be a lot easier to just drop the CPU in and use ThrottleStop. -
Actually it's X9100, X9000 is for PM965, but yeah, either one would run cooler, since they are Penryn. So, if you are still after it, pick the one that suits you better - X9000 - native support, no hardware mods required; or X9100 - requires hardware mod, but it's cheaper. You already know the third option - buy a new lappy. I have tried both BTW, and there's 4th option - pretty rare and super expensive X9100 E0
It runs COOL!

Oh yea, i thought something seemed amiss there.
There are x9100 for 129$
so now your decision is harder
oh definitely dont buy an m1730 on amazon for 500$ tho lol... -

Gaw supply and demand really kicks in for those older good pc parts, hows a x9000 gonna cost twice as much as x9100, whys my 60gb ide 2.5 have to cost as much as a 180gb sata !! muaha
