I understand that the Core 2 Duos (64 bit) are just around the corner and am wondering what performance boost the average user will see. Is it worth the added cost (if there is an added cost)? Is Merom rumored to be all that and a bag of chips?

    Thanks!

initially, most programs will probably not see much benefit, as they are not written to take advantage of 64 bit. If you plan on keeping the laptop 3+ years, you might see a benefit as new releases of software are written to take advantage of the capability.

another thing you might consider is price. As strikeback said, initailly most progrmas will be applications/prgrams will be coded for 32 bit processors. Also, once Core Duo 2 comes out, the orogianl Core Duo's will drop in price, so if your on a budget, it might be worth to get a Core Duo laptop.

However, games in future will be coded in 64bit, so if your getting a gaming laptop, get a Core Duo 2, there will be significant speed increases in gaming.

Ok, I'm gonna try to get through four years of college with this thing and cost shouldn't be the biggest deal so I think I'll go for it. Thanks!

Yeah, my parents and I just agreed to wait until Christmas-time before my next notebook purchase so that my budget would be even higher and I could get something that would actually last all the way through college. I'm glad now that I decided to wait so that I can get a Core 2 Duo comp. My only reservation in buying a Core Duo notebook was the lack of 64-bit, cause I know that's gonna become the standard in a few years. But it's so hard to find any Workstation-style notebooks with AMD chips right now.

Just wait a little longer because by Aug. the new Intel Meroms will come 64-bit, core dual.

The 64-bit capability is of less importance.
The only reason you should wait for it is the performance increase from the new architecture.
Just wait 2 months and we'll see how it compares to TX2
