I will be doing some web browsing, occasional DVD ripping and conversion. will be running Vista Home Premium on a HP DV6000. i want to use the laptop for at least 3 years.
Of the 2, which one do u think is better for me?
-
For future proofing the C2D is better. the older core duo is faster by 100mhz which isnt much really and the difference in performance will be tiny. both will be good for the things you need and will perform around the same but the C2D could be better due to an improved implementation. I say go for the C2D, it'll be better in the long term. You could also get a T7200 which has twice the cache (4MB), this will improve performance significantly for DVD ripping and conversion.
-
hmmm...then C2D it is...thanks man. i cant afford the T7200 atm. maybe i will go up to T5600, let's see. thanks again for the input
-
For DVD encoding you will want a better processor. I suggest the t5600 at least.

Spend the extra $50 and upgrade to the T5600 from the T5300. You'll be getting a nice boost in performance. The T5300 is a budget processor (1.73GHz/533MHz FSB) - the T5600 is a full-fledged Core 2 Duo with a higher clock (1.83GHz) and a proper 667MHz FSB.
-
Yup the $50 extra could be worth it in the long run
-
i've been missing the 667 FSB all this time!! how come i didnt remember that before? :S anyway, i have a $900 limit and for me to spend the extra 50 bucks on a T5600 would mean not opting for the GeForce Go 7400. is it any good anyway? i mean it is better than the integrated graphics, but how much better would it be? do i need it for my needs stated above?
thanks again for enlightening me!! -

Unless you are playing games then you do not need the Nvidia card.
-
No you won't unless you're playing games as Chaz said but if you think you ever will in the future, I would opt for the nvidia card cuz if you dont get it when you buy your system, you cant upgrade to it in the future. So you can upgrade the CPU, but not the graphics card later on.
-
Any chance you can sell a kidney or something, and get the 7400 AND the T5600? Or perhaps go with a slightly smaller/slower hard drive or RAM? Those can both be easily upgraded in the future, whereas the CPU and Graphics card cannot.
-
If you EVER want to explore HD DVD and Blu-Ray technology, or watch HDTV channels through a USB TV Tuner, you'll want the best GPU and CPU you can afford. If you're going to use the computer for 3 years, I'd try to max out as much as you possibly can (within reason of course).
-
If you want the rig to last for 3 years, you will want to have the best GPU and CPU you can get. Getting a smaller HD would be the best route to follow, as there are many excellent, completely portable external hard drives to fill your storage needs. I am personally a fan of factory RAM though. -
Sorry but I seriously disagree with Pitabred's statement!
I think you should sell someone else's kidneys that way you dont lose anything -
thanks for all your responses! i especially liked Pitabred's!! lol! yeah, i am willing to get the GeForce GPU and the T5600. I guess i should be prepared for the future. but the T7400 would be too much for me (i'm a student) and much of this is going from my pocket). i am taking the minimum possible HDD (just a 60 gig depending on when i buy it cos they sometimes give a free upgrade to 80 gigs). i am buying this Seagate external HDD :

i chose that too with help from you guys!! i wish i could get just 512 MB RAM and then upgrade to 1.5 or 2 GB, but i guess i can do that later...
So, this is the final spec:
Vista Home Premium
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
RAM 1GB DDR2 (2x512MB)
60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
802.11b/g WLAN
No TV Tuner w/remote control
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
all that for $934. what do you guys think? -
-
of course! 60GB? lol i can never live with that! hoping to buy a PMP that has 60 GBs in itself! i have the Cowon A2 now which is 30 GB already and that too isnt good for portable needs!
