Currently I have a Core Duo T2500 (2.0ghz) and I'm considering upgrading to a Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33ghz) which I believe is the faster CPU I can get that is compatible with my W3J.
My questions are:
- Will I see a noticeable performance difference?
- How much of a difference in performance does a 64bit OS have vs a 32bit? OS.
- Opinions on buying used CPU's on ebay.
My main reason for upgrading is to get more performance out of my current notebook instead of purchasing a new one. My main use for my notebook is for developing so I'm looking for faster build times...etc. I've already ordered a new HD (WD 250gb) to upgrade performance in that area.
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes if you play a lot of games or photoshop.
2. 64 bit can use more ram than 32bit
3. Don't know. Depends on the seller. If they have a lot of sells, yea good idea.
If you're looking for faster times, I would upgrade. -
1. Probably if under heavy load
2. 64 does allow 4GB of memory, but it still has some problems and isn't supported as much as 32bit is, I belive.
3. If its new, and the feedback of the seller is above 97% (that's what I basically go by) then yes. I wouldn't buy it if its used or feed ack is lower than 95% Also see why a sellers feedback is not so good, if its for slow shipping: and you don't really care if it takes a while, then I would buy from them. That's my opinion though, its a personal choice.
EDIT: Oh I just realized you said " buying used CPUs on eBay"
- so then I would say, don't buy it used. -
1.Under heavy load.
2.I'd stick to 32bit, less issues.
3.I'd say no, buy new. -
Buying new is certainly not worth it. street prices are very high. He is better off buying another laptop. Ebay has it around 350. if u can find one from a reliable seller at around 300 and u r desperate give it a shot.
I would recommend sticking with the current laptop for an year or so and upgrade when nehalem with calpello releases. -

Well I'm not going to dissuade you from doing what you like, but its a risk to upgrade from a T2500 to a T7600; what is the increase in TDP? Can your laptop's cooling system handle it?
Also, if you do have money to burn, why not search for a new laptop? -
I dont any use upgrading from T2500 to T7200.

Yeah I wouldn't do it. I had the T2500 and it was very fast IMO. I also had a T7300 (very similar to the T7200) and didn't notice very much difference.
You're also limited up to 4GB of RAM with your current chipset, regardless of what OS you're using. So acquiring a 64-bit CPU and a x64 OS isn't going to do much. You would be better off staying with 32-bit.
Save your money for something else. Might come in handy for that 'special something'. -

Most important question is the development work you do.
The answers sofar are fine for gaming, but really you should be asking a more dedicated forum for the app you're using. Some workstation apps work much better in a 64bit environment, others see no benefit. Also of course you need the OS and driver support to go along with the CPU.
The T7200 has more cache and the T7600 has 333mhz more speed, but if the application is bottlenecked elsewhere it may not matter much.
IMO unless you know for sure there's a benefit save your money, if you have oodles to spare you'd be buying a new laptop without asking. -
Thank you everyone for your advice. I think I'll go with the majority and save my money for something else...maybe a new bag.

If I were to buy a new CPU, would it include that little sticker aka "intel duo core stick".
thanks for the info. -
I believe if you buy the retail boxes you do.
