Whats up with all the new Intel Pentium M Core Duo notebooks having webcams like the HP DV1000T, Apple MacBookPro, Sony Vaio FE and SZ series and one model from Acer spring up into my head. Doesn't seem like a coincidence. Is Intel encouraging manufacturers to put cameras into their core duo notebooks or what? Are there any core duo notebooks without webcams because I haven't seen any.

The webcams are just the new "in" thing to have on your laptops. Many other companies had them prior to the Core Duo. Such as Asus, Sager, MSI (i think)

I know they've been around for a while in several notebooks but it seems as though they are really making inroads into notebook computers with the Core Duo processors coming out. Is this some sort of ploy by Intel or something?

I've had a webcam on my notebook on a long time. ;) Not new news to me.

It's just that they are starting to hit the mainstream now.

Personally, I think it is a cool feature, but I don't really use it. Occasionally, I video message with one of my friends, but not often.

I've heard in some places, like some businesses, cameras are not allowed, so then you wouldn't be able to take in your notebook at all if it had a webcam installed, that would be a big pain in the butt. :(

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe it will become important in the future? At the moment it only seems beneficial to pron sites running webcams :) Its a pity that probably because of the camera Asus for their 15.4" went with the glossy A chassis instead of the much nicer matte screen m6/z70.

Not being able to get access to places because of a camera in your brand new lappie would be a real pain especially if used for business.

All of those machines would qualify as consumer/personal machines...not business class. Certainly they can be used for business, but that's not their market aim.

Thats true but I was talking about duo core in general and cameras. I am looking at the Asus v6j for business and it has a camera too.

Yeah, personally, I'd perfer to get an external webcam which will attach to the top of my notebook and gives me more flexibility. If I have to take my notebook in a secure place, like a courthouse, then I can just remove the camera. HP at least with their core duo DV1000T give you the option of having the webcam or not. Its so weird that they killed the Pentium name!
