I have a laptop with a Core Duo T2300. I would like to pop in a Core 2 Duo T5750 if it's possible. They share the same socket (Socket M). My Core Duo is rated for a 533 MHz FSB, and the Core 2 Duo in question is rated for a 667, so obviously if the upgrade were possible my new Core 2 would be multiplying 133 and thus would be running at 1600 MHz instead of its rated 2 GHz. I understand that. But that is not a concern to me because I would just find a way to "overclock" it to proper speed.
So is this a feasible avenue for me? I am fairly skilled with computers, but I need a real pro to give me some feedback on this, cuz I'd love to get me a Core 2! Thanks.

UHmm this is interesting.
Intel's T5750 is Socket P, and is NOT reverse compatible with Socket M, at all..
Here's mine
CPU-Z Validator 3.1
More over you should be able to go to a core 2 duo provided it is a Socket M, and your laptop's motherboard has compatibility with Core 2 duo which can be a crab shoot.. Can you post more details, Motherboards Model #, chipset, and laptop model/brand so I can pull up precise documentation.
Here's the Core 2 Duo's that are Socket M:
T5200
T5250
T5300
T5500
T5600
T7200
T7600
T7600G -
My laptop is an MPC Transport T2400. Specs are:
Intel Core Duo Processor T2300 (1.66GHz)
1536 MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
80GB Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 128MB Video Memory
But here's the thing: I bought this laptop on ebay and it actually hasn't arrived yet, and the research I did on the laptop says it comes with a Core Duo, but now I'm finding stuff on the net saying it comes with Core 2 Duo. I apologize if I have wasted your time here, but your answer was valuable to me regardless, particularly, "..and your laptop's motherboard has compatibility with Core 2 duo which can be a crap shoot", because that was what I was looking for, that hidden problem that would gum me up. -
If the laptop is being sold with a Intel T2300, that's definitely 100% a Core Duo, not a core 2 duo.
MPC actually purchased Gateway's Professional laptop division from them.. I wouldn't go for them unless the price was a steal.
As far as upgrading goes I would not put money in it. -
The ebay ad said "Core 2 Duo", but when I did my research, all the webpages I viewed (including products.howstuffworks.com and mobilewhack.com) said it came with a Core Duo. Got the laptop for $250, and for playing WoW and typing email, this laptop is BOMB.

Intel945GM chipset can handle C2D and will work IMHO.
-
ellalan is correct, it should support C2D, provided MPC didn't mess with the bios. I just checked their website, seems there's a few bios updates. You should research a bit more before buying C2D

Thanks for all your help, this is really a great forum. My laptop arrived with a Core 2 Duo. Surprise there. Anyway, I appreciate all your feedback. Hope I didn't annoy anyone with a question that turned out to be moot.

Which Core 2 Duo did you actually get?

Hello going to sound like dillon here. just bought a sony vaio off ebay, waiting for it to arrive next week.
It is of the ar series looking like the 190g. Come with 2ghz (don't know the cpu # sticker says intel inside). 1gb mem and 200gig hard drives, 100x2. And blue-ray drive.
Was looking at swapping out the old cpu for a intel t7200. Mainly for the 4gb of mem vs. 2gb. And to have a 64 bit system.
If the system is 2ghz almost has to be a t2500 which is socket 478.
The t7200 is socket 479.
Don't know about p or m sockets could some one with more savy than me clue me in.
Thanks

For got to mention currently using sony vaio pcg f480.

Hi taz069,
You shouldn't get PBGA479 processors, they have Balls and soldered not Pins, get PPGA478 T7200.
You may get T2450 or T2500 in your laptop if it is 2GHz, all these processors are socket M.
As a side note, increasing RAM and faster Hard drive yield more performance increase than upgrading CPU but it's entirely up to you and depends what you do with your machine. Good luck and post any questions if you are in doubt.

Yeah it's an Intel T2500, Core Duo.
Socket M, I am very certain.

Also most links refer to it as Socket M processor.
Also there's no Core Duo Socket P. -
I could swear I saw the same questions regarding Core Duo and Core 2's some four years ago.
For the laptop in my signature, I had to flash the BIOS with an update to enable compatibility with Core 2's. You may have to do the same---do a Google search for BIOS updates for your laptop model. -
Socket M procie not compatible with Socket P procie
Core Duo to Core 2 Duo
