What notebooks are able to be upgraded? I know many have the processor soldered into the mainboard. Can we get a list going of notebooks that are able to be upgraded? I really want to know if my nx9420 can be upgraded since I can't find the info on it anywhere. Add to the list if you know any that are able/unable to be upgraded.

i'm fairly certain that it would be. to check, download and run CPU-Z. if, on the main page, you see that the "package" is "Socket 479 m PGA" then you are fine. it stands for Micro Pin Grid Array i think.
anyway, i wouldn't bother upgrading unless you need 64-bit capability. the speed increase isn't all that much, and you'd be voiding your warranty on the notebook.
before you say you need 64bit for Vista...it comes in a 32 bit flavor as well.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Hello,
i have a Toshiba A100-290 with a Intel Core T1300.
Now i'm thinking of upgrading my CPU till Viesta is released.
I started CPU-Z and i have the package "Socket 479 mPGA".
I haven't opened my case already but i have already heard, that Toshiba connectes his CPU's to the sockel with a methode called TCP (Tape Carrier Package).
The instruction on http://www.irisvista.com for changing the motherboard on a A105 shows a decomposed laptop where the CPU is decomposed, too.
Is there any opportunity to take the CPU off and take a new CPU on with the same carrier?
Thanks, kind regards,

Santa Rosa is not a chip. It is a platform. So, no, you cannot upgrade to Santa Rosa. To clarify, Napa is the current platform. Yonah and Merom currently are running on Napa. Early next year Intel will move to Santa Rosa. Merom will run on Santa Rosa, although it will be a different pin configuration. -
I take it that I won't be able to upgrade to this platform(at least not for a cheap price, if it's possible at all) -
Platform means motherboard and chipset. So no, you won't

Well, you have to pay some price to get things mobile. And with stuff like the VBI movement by Intel, it'll be easier to upgrade notebooks and such.

VBI, that a new thing for me, could you elaberate so I can get up to date on this?
