The cost difference between the two can be staggering; before I buy, is there a large difference between their performances?

Im not an expert but I wouldnt imagine there would be a huge difference and for me it would all depend on the price difference, is it like 60-100 dollors or only like 20-30 dollors? If its only like 20 or 30 then go for it why not? If its around 60-100 then i would say dont do it.

I concur with ArmanSLR. You probably won't see much of a difference to justify the price jump

Yeah--for instance, on an Asus configuration that I was toying around with, the difference was $480.

Intel's top-shelf processors are not worth the premium. The best price/performance is normally the third one down from the top.

buying retail I think the difference is $100+, and therefore not worth it over the 2.0

Exactly. I would even go for the 1.8 or 1.6 if available. I'm not sure what you're trying to do with your notebook, but mine has been able to do everything I've thrown at it: full-res, full eye-candy Source games, HD video, fast music and video compression... web surfing... LOL

I bought the cheapest because I know that in six months, I can buy the fastest upgrade possible without the premium - and the frees up cash for other upgrades.

I believe I read in another post at this site that someone did some benchmarking between the two and and there was not a great change.

I too am going through the same issue.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be going with the 2500 though because I figure it'd save me some money, and I can try putting a merom in if someone gets us a new bios
