So what exactly makes the Duo 2 better? I was told, if you are like me and single using a single P-M cpu, and dont have Core duo yet....dont bother getting a duo yet...just wait for the core 2's. Do you agree?

64-bit support, 2-25% performance increase depending on what your gonna do with it.

Uh, if you want to wait go ahead, but unless you want a little bit of improvment in rendering, video encoding or decoding, etc... the current Core Duo is fine.

But I suggest you should might aswell wait.

heres my explanation of core duo vs. core 2 duo:

    ---
the core duo is essentially 2 pentium m processors mashed into 1 chip.

it isnt going to double your performance or anything because they share all of the same resources (bus bandwidth and cache)

in some cases this will have no benefit (playing most games, browsing the internet)

in other cases it will have a mild to significant impact (attempting to do multiple tasks at once or playing multi threaded games)

the core solo is simply a refresh tweak of the pentium m
    ---

core 2 is entirely different, it gives up the aging netburst technology which intel has been using for years, in favor of the "core" (yippee) tech.

the core 2 duo is 2 of these new chips mashed into a die.

you can expect performance increases to vary. in some situations it will perform much better, in other cases marginally better or the same, but there are some kickers...

for one thing - it is a 64 bit processor, and intel's first and only for a mobile platform. And you can expect maybe a 15-25% performance increase in a 64 bit os vs a 32 bit, with quality drivers and programming when it becomes more mainstream (i say 12 months), on top of the fact that you might see 15-25% perfomance due to being a faster processor.

also - the core 2 duo comes with all of these things (abilty to use 64 bit os and faster processing) at a reduction of battery consumption. when you put this chip in your 32 bit system, (xp) you get increased performance of maybe 20% while, as i recall, either keeping the same power draw, or about 20% battery life increase (all other things being the same) depending on what you are doing.

ladies and gentlemen, the i bid you all aduo.

Wow, didnt know it was a 64bit cpu - that right there is probably enough reason to wait for it.

Well since i dont have core duo, Im in no hurry to get one...so in say 6 months or a years time ill get a new laptop and then the prices of duo 2 should be dropped by then.

I figure since i already have P-M, why not wait a year and get a duo 2 then. It wont be a drastic upgrade for me anyways and considering i dont really do video work, I dont need it right now.

Now, if I was still using a P3 or P4 lappy, then ya it would be another story. But the Solo P-M should still be in the market for a bit longer.

    TripleH,

Still looking for something to buy eh?

Although the current Core 2 Duos are better than the Core Duos, it's really not by a whole lot. You will see more improvement sometime next year when Santa Rosa comes out to increase the FSB to relieve some of the bottleneck.

And I agree with your assessment that you can get some use out of your Pentium M VAIO. Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad will be waiting for you when that VAIO wants to retire and you can get your Macbook Core 2 Quad then.
