I just bought a new HP dv6t quad edition laptop with a Core i7 720QM processor. I'm a little curious/concerned about core temps. Using RealTemp 3.4 it reported my idle core temps as 55C. Compared to my overclocked desktop (3.4GHz Q9450), which idles at just under 40C, that seems high. Granted, the laptop doesn't have a large cooler like my desktop, but for a stock processor, I just want to make sure that the core temps are normal. Do any other Core i7 owners have values to compare with or advice? The only info I could find on Intel's site is that the Tjmax is 100C. Did I get a bad machine?

No, you didn't get a bad machine. Those temperatures are alright for a Core i7. What matters more than idle temps is load temps, as they can determine the maximum heat that the i7 is going to output generally. My laptop also idles hotter than my desktop, with my laptop generally around 35C, and my desktop being around 25C.

If you use HWMonitor while playing a game, you can then exit, and it will tell you the maximum temperature reached by the processor while you were playing.

My 820 idles around 46C, so given the differences in cooling I think mid 50's is about right.

The sensors in these are more tuned for load tempteratures (since they are used for safety reasons) and therefore idle temperatures are not to be trusted anyway.

    My dv7t i7 720QM idles between 42 and 47 C after a full day of work.

The i7 (desktop and laptops) simply run hotter than other CPUs...

Nice temps relax24! Ive never seen a idle temp that low.

I wish Dells 1557 design would have been better thought out.

Disabling Turbo doesn't help as expected.

If anyone know of a app that lets you disable HT on the mobile i7 please let me know.I do think that will lower temps a bit.

After doing those test there really is no reason to turn it off.Knowing that it doesn't add voltage when using Turbo I didn't expect it to help any.

Just seeing if it would effect temps.

    How are these temperature readings?

    At 35 degree room temp,
10% or less CPU load, core temp is 60 deg
100% CPU load, core temp is 85 deg

    At 20 degree room temp,
10% or less CPU load, core temp is 50 deg
100% CPU load, core temp is 77 deg

    these numbers look ok.
if you could test it further with intel burn test: http://downloads.guru3d.com/IntelBurnTest-v1.6-download-2047.html
with settings as 32 threads and max stress level, and show the cpu max temps, it would be more informative.

Added results for IntelliBurn v2 with Maximum stress and 32 threads.

    At 35 degree room temp,
10% or less CPU load, core temp is 60 deg, GPU 65 deg
100% CPU load by Everest Stress test, core temp is 85 deg, GPU 72 deg
100% CPU load by IntelliBurn Test, core temp is 92 deg, GPU 80 deg

    At 20 degree room temp,
10% or less CPU load, core temp is 50 deg, GPU 55 deg
100% CPU load by Everest Stress test, core temp is 77 deg, GPU 62 deg

Hello guys, i think i have a major problem with my Toshiba Qosmio x505. I have the same I7 but Real Temp shows temperatures at about 30% load of 70 degrees, and in idle it doesn't drop below 60 or so. Anyone had the same problems with these Toshibas? Should i take my laptop for a check-up or something? Thanks a lot!

cold in the room ... huh. That affects your idle temps.

P.S. Is DetlevCM a relative of yours ? Sorry for the side question.
