My laptop is an Asus R751J (X750JN) with the intel core i7-4700HQ CPU and nVidia GeForce 840M 2 GB (1.1 Ghz), display is 1600x900. This is a fairly thin laptop, about 1" when closed. Windows 7 Home Prem., x64 (hated Windows 8.1). All drivers for hardware are present, current and it's running normally.
When I run Firestorm SecondLife Viewer (x64 bit) on high settings, the CPU hits 76° C at high settings, full screen res. (1600x900 native). Is this an abnormally high temperature? Doesn't matter if I select the "High Performance" or "Balanced" Windows 7 power plans, always hovers around this temp. The laptop idles around 45 - 47°C. (These are "Temp1" temperatures taken from SpeedFan, which is what I go by, not individual core temps, which are usually a bit lower. Temp1 is the whole CPU "package", right?).
I noticed that the big copper heat pipe for the CPU is shared with the nVidia GPU, kinda "daisy-chained" with it...would this contribute to the high CPU temp, and is there anything I can do about it? (I already have a nice, flat "laptop desk" which I always use).

This is pretty normal for a Haswell i7. Actually its really good for a one fan system.

thanks, Kirrr -
i was considering tearing it back down again and removing the OEM thermal paste for the CPU and GPU heatsinks and replacing it with Arctic Silver 5 (something i'd rather not undertake right now).

I dont think you can get better temps else you do a little Undervolt on the 4700HQ
-
The 4700MQ/HQ can usually be undervolted a fair bit (though it depends on your luck/ASIC quality).
I have mine set to -100mV dynamic across all cores, which is a reasonable voltage drop, and temps have improved noticeably.
You can undervolt using Intel XTU. -
If you are going to repaste, use IC Diamond or Gelid GC Extreme.. AS5 is obsolete and MX-4 is junk..
-
Or Liquid Ultra which is the best you can get.
-
To add to these two, Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 is another fantastic paste in their level of cooling. Been a couple months on my CPU so far, no indication of temp deterioration.
-
I don't think the OP has the skill for it and it would be overkill.. IC Diamond or GC Extreme is enough..
I'm quite surprised however, I'd recoomnend IC Diamond all the way.. It's been rock solid for me.. Allows me to do more Ocing then before.. My 3940XM runs at 4.0GHz on all 4 cores in games now (4.2GHz is unstable and caused World of Tanks to crash yesterday).. -
It's done as well for me as ICD ever has. I think maybe 1-2 deg hotter at some points? It's difficult to tell. I'd love a tube of CLU for myself mind you, so I can do some OCing in this hot country, but otherwise this performs just fine. I rarely cross 82 degrees unless I'm doing some SERIOUS CPU benching like linpack.
-
overkill ..? No No No
-
For the i7-4700HQ , CLU is overkill.. For the i7-4930MX/4940MX it isn't... That's one thing for sure

No such thing as overkill on cool temps =D.

8-10 degrees lower temperature of the processor is always delightful ...
-
Is liquid ultra that good that it's reduces temps by 8-10C compared to IC Diamond? I seriously doubt that..

It is, when applied correctly. Especially on bare-die CPUspapusan likes this.

Take a look at the tests from Mr Fox and this is with the colder Ivy bridge. I have used Liquid Ultra now in 10 months and the temperature has increased by 0 degrees on these months. During all my benchmark tests would any other type of thermal grease been unusable for my processor after short while

Quoting J.Dre from the thread you linked,
My sentiments agree with him exactly..
Core i7-4700HQ reaching 76° C in Firestorm x64 SL Viewer - High Settings. Normal Temp?
