My new laptop had self-shutdown out of no reason. I will be sending it for repair. I prefer to remove the HD before sending it in, but would like to know if my HD could have anything to do with the problem so the tech may need to see the HD? Should I remove the HD or not?

You can't send in part of a system; it must be complete in order to get a complete diagnostic. Back up your personal data and leave the drive in.

Two things you can do: test the hard drive in an external enclosure/adapter and test the laptop without the hard drive. If the HDD works and the laptop doesn't, then the HDD is probably not the culprit. If the HDD doesn't work and the laptop does... well, I've never seen that sort of thing happen before...

It only happened once or twice, so can't really test if it happens again. I've read that some/many people remove the HD before sending in for repair if they know it's definitely not HD problem. So I just want to know if HD defect could cause power problem like this.

Even if it isn't a HD defect, the problem may be caused by something running from your HD, such as a bad driver. You're really probably best off sending the whole thing in.
