Hi -- i broke the screen on my Compaq presario V2000 recently and have decided to recover the data by popping out the hard drive and sticking it in an enclosure, and hooking that up to my new notebook (an HP Pavilion). unfortunately, the old drive wasn't compatible with the enclosure i bought at Best Buy. The drive itself is an 80 GB Fujitsu MHV2080AT. I need an enclosure with a USB 2.0 external interface and capable of talking to Vista. would anyone have a suggestion for a device that is definitely compatible? many thanks -- VCD

There's really no need for recommendations, decisions, etc., AFAIK. They are very simple devices, and all about the same. Best to go for the cheapest.

One important thing you do need to pay attention to, as far as compatibility though. Is the drive you will put in the enclosure IDE (PATA) or SATA? They have a different connector, and you need the right type for your drive. (I've seen some enclosures that had both connectors, but most are one or the other.)

When you say "old drive", if you mean a few years old or so, the drive is probably IDE, PATA. You probably bought a SATA enclosure at Best Buy, and it did not work, did not connect.

I think they are all USB 2.0, every one I have seen, including the cheapest. They all should work in any OS, certainly Vista.

So--once you know IDE or SATA, go for the cheapest. Those at Best Buy are probably overpriced, not really your "best buy". I just bought both an IDE one and a SATA one at Fry's Electronics for about $10 each. You could also search on the Internet.
