I have a fairly new laptop basically my room is pretty small and my friend walked past causing the office chair's palm rest to swing into the table where my laptop is placed. I am worried if this could damage the laptop such as the hard drive or any other components because of the vibration effect caused by the chair arm rest against the table. The laptop wasn't switched on.

What damages a mechanical HDD is the drive head that seeks your data on the disk touching the surface causing irreparable damage. This is possible only when the drive is in use and the laptop is subject to shock. Normally, there is a safety feature that immediately locks the head away from the plate allowing no damage. When the disk is not in use, the drive head parks itself to the side. Therefore there should be no damage to the hard disk.
Agree with hockeymass. No damage. But avoid such situations please. -
depends if the chair swings hard enough and knocks the lappy on the floor and then a dog or cat pee's all over it.
im guessing its a dorm so you wont have a cat or dog but how students are now a days after a night on the lash it could be one of them that pee's all over it
alternately i agree with hockeymass -
its actually my bedroom and small. The office chair nudge into the tabe if i have to say. I am concerned is if the laptop was OFF would this be able to still damage the hard drive or the components.Im not a laptop expert but

i wouldnt of thought it would cause any damage.

Even if the laptop was on it wouldn't do anything. You need to provide some serious shock to the laptop to damage it.
