Hi, I just purchased an eme520 (I know not a great laptop, but it was a pretty good deal). Anyway it comes with a Celeron M575 CPU and I wasn't thinking of upgrading, from what I have learned (and feel free to correct me) it has the GL40 Chipset (I know ::groans:: :p ) which means I am limited to CPUs at bus speeds of 667. I was thinking of putting in a T3400, I assume that shouldn't be an issue since it has the same voltage requirements as the M575, same socket type, same 667 bus speed, etc and I'm pretty sure the bios supports it, since the eme720 (which comes with a T3400) shares the same bios as the eme520. But can I go for a T5850 and is it worth the extra $50? and if so will it be that much of a performance increase over the T3400, I'm sure the GFX will be a major bottleneck anyway. I will be using it for light gaming (mostly stuff several years old tho, i.e. Toca3, GP4, etc), basic office tasks - tho I do often have several programs running at once (Outlook, Word, Calyx, Firefox, a PDF editor, etc).
Also obviously I will be upgrading the memory, it apparently supports Dual Channel RAM, and comes with 1GB of 667 DDR2 CL5, I assume I should pair it with the same, I know I can upgrade to 800 CL6 but then I will end up with both running at 667 CL6 if I am not mistaken. I was going to just go with 2x1GB, unless 1x1GB and 1x2GB would be any better, I know that possibly only the first 2GB would be DC, but I doubt in my everyday tasks I would exceed 2GB anyway. And lastly, whats the difference between DDR2 667 PC5300 and DDR2 667 PC5400.

Sorry for the long post but any help would be appreciated.

There's a GL40 thread floating around somewhere here...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=334009

Apparently 800MHz FSB processors are pretty much not going to work... but 667MHz FSB processors look like they should. It's a still a crapshot though; I wouldn't go for the T5850 as it's not that much faster than the T3400 and there's a chance that it may not work. Maybe wait for the results of that one guy's attempted upgrade?

At least one person has mentioned that they have been able to upgrade to 4GB of memory. I think that 4GB should work without any real problems. If you're just doing "everyday tasks", there probably isn't a need to go up to 3GB or 4GB. There is no difference between PC5300 and PC5400. It's the same thing.

Thank you for the answers. Yeah I have been keeping an eye on that thread to see if the T5850 works, looking at some basic benchmarks comparing a CD and C2D (w 2x L2) there didnt seem to be a big difference especially since the X4500M will probably be a bottleneck. I think I will go with the T3400 and save my money or at least invest it in RAM. I think T3400 and 4GB would yield better performance gains vs. a T5850 and 2GB RAM, tho both should be better than a M575 and 1GB :p
Now I just have to hope that Emachines/Acer/Gateway (or whatever this thing is) haven't soldered the CPU in or anything stupid.
