One side of the ventilation is covered, if I remove the cover will it improve the temps, at the moment the temps are ok and no major problems but I just want to know the purpose of it.

Yes, it will improve temps if you remove the cover however those holes look quite big and were possibly meant for the exhaust fan until the motherboard design (heatsink place) got changed so you might wanna look into adding some mesh to the hole once removed.

Thanks a lot for the help, going to look for a mesh.

What make and model does that belong to that would help others with similar laptop to help assist on if there is a actual vent there or that is just cosmetic??? If that is a vent there with a plastic backing and you can remove it that would also be something to look into but if not you should try to clean out the fan and fins of dust first that would be the first place to look for getting rid of dust and the prime candidate for overheating and heat build ups. You be surprised just taking the cooling fins out you will see the layers of dust buildups - I taken apart used laptops I bought that always had the fans going only to find out the layers of dust covering the fins preventing proper airflow to keep the CPU/GPU cool and that cleaning drastically stop constant fan going and help to dissipated heat more effective. -

You might want to look into the design a little more. Chances are that chassis is designed like that because air is directed somewhere else. If you open those vents, you run the risk of hindering the integrity of the thermodynamics. And if your temps are stable, there's all the more reason it would be unnecessary.

Sorry, it's the Acer Aspire 5610z, I would like to try just for experimental purpose only, as I have originally stated I have no problems with the temps. Thanks for all the suggestions.
