I was wondering what would be a future proof CPU for Gaming...

Like..i dont think i need Core 2 Extreme..but maybe I do? What is a negotiable frequency that i need for games? I think im going to buy a laptop that will last for 2 - 4 years. So what CPU should i be looking at?

I heard that the CPU is not as important as the graphics card and like a Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz will be just fine. Im willing to upgrade but exactly how much should I?

If I have the options of 2.26, 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.93, X3.06..what would be a relatively stable processor for gaming?

Oh..the games i want to play are BF2, CS, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 5, etc. I would like to try Far cry 2...but thats not necessary..Please advise!

Several newer games are relying heavily on quad cores. You should try and get one if you can.

No such thing as future proof, never will be.

Quadcore is probably your best bet for sure, however the games that do not take advantage of them yet that require high cpu speed may actually run better on a higher clocked dual core if given the right circumstances.

I think the q9100 or q9300 are both high enough, but the q9000 I would be a bit worried about unless you overclock it.

Depends on the type of game you want to be playing. Some games are quite CPU dependent while others aren't. There will always be more demanding games than others so you have to give us some type of a hint at what you are playing/want to be playing in the future.

Quads are indeed the most "future-proof" of CPUs, but heck, it's not as if a large portion of games really rely efficiently on Quad Cores. IMO, other than the rare exceptions, I've never really seen the need for anything more than 2.4GHz on a Core 2 Duo for the current market.

Dont worry about the out of stock X1's those are not as good, save your money.

Well, the normal games like BF2, CS and Left 4 Dead.

But I also want to play some games like Call of Duty 5 and Far Cry 2......if possible.

W90 can do it, it has dual 4870's in it. Its more powerful than most peoples desktops. It just came out though so I think we have not learned how to get max performance out of it and need newer drivers.
