New notebook only 2 days old , running Vista 32bit

In hwmonitor and others the cpu core temps do not change even if i run prime95 ,wprime or orthos , all of the other temps do.

But if i re-boot then check the temp it will have changed , it is really low 26c when i first boot in the morning but general idle temps are 40-43c on the cores.

As i said it only changes on re-boot.

    Anybody have a clue???????

    I have run

    hwmonitor
    real temp
    pc wizard 2009
    rightmark cpu clock

can you try with some other software to check the temp?

    It's a very strange problem.

I have never heard of anything like that before.

Any chance you have a linux live distro that you can use to test if the same thing happens?

Sounds like a software problem, but it could be something wrong with the CPU. At least you have warranty if you cant solve this problem :)

I had the same thought as you to try linux , but i have never used it before , I know you can get one that runs of cd/dvd but i dont know what it is called to download it.

I have downloaded "ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386" is this the right one? , also what cpu temp software does linux use?

    thanks.

With orthos running my cpu at 100% my cpu is only showing 32c and is unchanged by orthos while my fans are speeding up as the cpu gets hot.

I'm thinking you have the wrong SMBus controller installed or missing, one installed by default in Vista not the one matching your MB's chip. Get the latest driver from the vendor that makes your MB's chip. I'm guessing it's probably Intel.

I just put Win7 and updated the bios to the latest version and the core temps on both cores still do not move, so it looks like a hardware problem.

    Yes.

    Something like this:
    http://howto-ubuntu.com/2008/02/14/how-to-monitor-cpu-temperature/

But I guess if it didn't work after you tried win7, it probably is a hardware issue. So I wouldn't even bother with ubuntu, I would just get a replacement.

Everything else is working fine though , the fan speeds up when i play games or run high cpu usage programs, and i have no noticable dead or hot pixels , so i cannot read my cpu core temp , is it such a big deal?

It depends on what the problem is, if it is just a bad CPU, then maybe I could live with it (but would ask for some cash back).

But really you don't know for sure what is causing this, and it could be a bad motherboard, so I would say it is a big deal.

    same here.
I dont know why core temp is not refreshed.
I changed cpu several times(T5500, T7400 ES, etc...), but same.
    My mainboard chipset is 945PM.

When i go into sleep mode and come out it reads the cpu temperature , this is very strange.

There is a small chance that there is a problem with the dsdt table in the registry.

I can take a look at your code for you if you want.

If you could follow steps 1 to 7 in the PDF I attached. Then upload you dsdt.ASL file here (just rename it to dsdt.txt).

There is usually one line in the code that determines the temperature sampling interval. Could be an error there, who knows.

If you want to make sense of the file yourself, everything you need is in the ACPI spec (just google it).
