hey guys
im wondering what would be the best upgrade for the above laptop
but im confused by the chipset
as the manufacturer claims its a GL40 chipset
but CPUz and every other app ive used claims its the GM45/GM47
ive seen a few cpu's that are compatable with The GM45/GM47 Chipset such as the X9100
for a reasonable price
but who should I believe on the chipset ???
thanks for any help

I think you will benefit heading to this thread and read as I think you may have BIOS restrictions regarding CPU upgrade, you may also find out the answer for your query, I'll post if I find any useful info.

I don't mean to sound daft but what thread ?? as there isn't one
-
Out of sheer curiosity: what CPU is in there right now?
-
its got a T9300 at the moment with no issues
-
Well, that would lead me to believe that it's going to need a pinmod for running a X9100 or any 1066MHz Penryn for that fact.
-
it says it supports a 1066 cpu tho so would it really need a pin mod ??
if so id give it a go
it also works with a T5800 as that's what it came with -
I'm not in the least familiar with the unit that you own. What I've stated is based on my experience with other laptops of the same era.
T5800 is a 800MHz Merom CPU, so it makes sense that T9300 (800MHz Penryn) works out of the box. The appropriate upgrade path would be X9000, but these are expensive and tend to run hot.
Personally, I'd buy a cheap 1066MHz Penryn such as T8700 for a few quid, just to verify how a 1066MHz processor behaves in there to begin with. If all is well, have fun with X9100 presuming that you're certain that the cooling system will suffice.
My $0.02 only... -
you make a valid point there ill puck up a T8700 to test it with and see how it goes
as for the X9100 does it run that much hotter ???
if so should I just stick with T9300 -
Once again: I don't know anything about your laptop, but:
Having owned numerous ThinkPads utilizing the same chipset and CPUs, I'll say that T9300 was the best option regarding price/performance ratio.
I've never built anything using a X9100, but have gone through several builds with X9000 and these babies do run hot.
Now, if you prove that the machine will run a 1066MHz CPU, you might want to look into E8435. It's a very high-end chip for 1/2 price of X9100.
Personally, I'd stick with T9300, throw in a SSD and max out the RAM, but that's me.
Good luck. -
I second ajkula66's suggestion, there isn't much between those CPUs and you have to consider the heat factor as well, a SSD and a max RAM would be a nice upgrade but it's your call.
PassMark - Intel Core2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50GHz - Price performance comparison
PassMark - Intel Core2 Extreme X9000 @ 2.80GHz - Price performance comparison
PassMark - Intel Core2 Extreme X9100 @ 3.06GHz - Price performance comparison -
thanks again ive already maxed ram out at 8GB
and has it has 2 hard drive bays I could always stick in an SSD and move the OS over to there
so ill try a cheap 1066MHZ cpu and see what happens atleast then I know its an option
if all is well I might just stay with my T9300 -
I think that's the best choice - the T9300 is the best you can use on a GL40 I believe (well, some laptops work with 1066MHz chips, but not all). Anyway, the price of an X9100 isn't worth it at this point.
-
ok lets correct something its not got the GL40 chipset even tho the manufacturer claims it has
as CPU-z claims its the GM45/GM47
and PC Wizard
but like I said im going to try and 1066 cpu and get a nice new SSD
