Instead of getting a new processor and gpu, just go and get a new notebook espcially if ur's is a old model (more than 3 years old)

its more of a budget project i have a newer laptop that is fine, but i want to try and freshe this thing up to run windows 7 X64.in reality im trying to build the fastest book i can with this computer. i picked up for 50 bucks from a person who thought the hard drive was bad when it turned out that it just wasnt secured properly. i bought a 2gb stick of crucial pc2 6400 for $18. i picked up a western digital 320gb 7200rpm hdd for $50. its running windows vista home premium x64 now but i have a copy of win7 ultimate that i want use and i want to upgrade this cpu.

Your laptop supports up to the AMD Turion TL series processors
The TL-60 through TL-68 will work for you if you can find them cheap enough.
I would spend more than $75 on a replacement processor
K-TRON -
thank you very much. are there anyother things you could reccomend to make this thing as fast as possible?
thanks -
And a 7200rpm Harddrive helps with Booting and Loading times.
Other things like Defragging, cleaning Up your Startup Programs, and Uninstalling unused programs can help speed a bit as well. -
for these computers is it more efficeint to have 1 2gb stick of pc2 6400 800 or 2 idividual sticks 1 gb each? umfourtunatley this comp can only acommidate 2 gb of memory and i installed a single 2gb stick of the pc2 6400. would a cpu upgrade allow me to install more ram. or is it a mother board issue
thanks -
I'd go with the TL-68 that K-TRON recommended at 2.4 Ghz. That would be an excellent upgrade! Just make sure your FSB speed matches your RAM PC # or you will have a bottleneck. Yea and clean out any manufacture bloatware progs, that will help also or just get Windows 7 installed. 7 is WAY faster than Vista. Good luck

Two 1GB Sticks are a little better because it can use Dual Channel. But if you already have one 2GB Stick, dont worry about it, not much of a difference. -
No offense intended... but by the time you're done and pouring money into the laptop to make it "faster," well you've spent near the same amount of money as a cheap laptop that'll probably out perform it.

so far have $115 invested in this and i have a TL68 on the way for $60. its not my *main* laptop and i dont expect it to run with a brand new top of the line machine but i still want to see what i can get out of it. im crossing my fingers that the CPU is as described.
ahl395 is that advice these same given the 2gb is pc2 6400 800 ,a nd the 1gb sticks are pc2 5300 667? -
Where did you find a tl 68 for 60, there like 350 on ebay considering US dollars.
-
Stick with what you have, its good enough.

A little update.....
I didnt receive a Tl-68 as promised, it was a tl-66. after some squabbling i got a $10 refund and decided to use the Tl66, as i cant find a reasonably priced TL-68 for under 180 usd...yet..... i added an upgraded cooling fan to help with the extra heat, this thing with the tk-53 would burn my legs with out one of those cumbersome cooloing pads.
i also bought some pc2-6400 OCZ hp Ram for $50usd on ebay. i got 4gb(2x2gb) the motherboard supossedly only supports a max of 2gb, but i have talk with some other people and they are running the same laptop with vistax64 with 4gb of ram. i laso found a seagate(meh) 320gig 7200.2 hdd for $30 bucks on ebay, when the western digital crashed.()
I found a RTM version of Windows7 ultimate x64, and a tool kit to activate it.
i must say that windows 7 is by far the best operating system i have ever used, and i have installed it on all 4 of my computers. worth any money u have to spend if you arent clever enough to get it otherwise.
that being said it took a few tries to get the mobo to recognize the cpu. i had to flash a custom Bios to it(but i can overclock now) which was new to me and i felt very unsecure in doing this, but its worked so far. i doubt ill use the "overclock:" feature, as this thing gets pretty hot still and i dont think it would be productive.
as soon as i get the ram(next day or two) ill post here if i was successfull with the 4gb upgrade.
so heres the specs so far
Dell 1501
AMD Tl-66 2.3ghz
15.6" screen
ATI Radeon 1150express(?)
$100($50 added for cpu)
(western digital 320gb hdd, defective,not returnable)$50
Seagate 320gb 7200rpm hdd $30
OCZ hp Ram 4gb $50
Windows 7 ultimatex64 $0
custom Bios v2.6.5 $90
so for $310 usd so far ( would be less had i not bought a lame western digi hdd) i have "Built" a fairly formatable laptop.
now on to the ATI xpress1150, is there anyway to get more out of this thing, it says it only has 16mb of video mem available(?) can i boost the gpu or is this thing one of the few that are replace-able? any ideas?
thanks -
^^^
Good.
Well, for the graphics card. It cannot be upgraded. But if you go int BIOS... Often, there are options for how much memory the card can take. Usually a 16, 32, and 128MB options. Check. -
update....
the 4gb of ram does work juat fine in a 64 operating system, however if you run a 32 bit it only will recognize 2gb, and not the 3.2 it theorectically should. this must be some limit that dells bios may have with a 32 bit system, but then it would stand to figure that it would still only recgognize 2gb with a 64 bit....but hey it recognizes the full 4gb , so im happy about that.
i found the problem with the video card was that the driver for the RTM windows 7 release were not compatible initally with my video card. i tried like hell to find drivers for this and NONE of the ati drivers worked even the "Windows7" drivers. after 2 weeks of 1024res, i got sick of it and wiped the hard drive. re installed windows...well all of a sudden my video card was at its 512mb mem and was able to display up 1440 res. idk why but it all of a sudden worked.
now i face a another problem. i learned that the battery is bad, as i actidentally pulled the plug from the back and the computer died. now when i turn it on it will boot all the way to where you log on to windows, short of actually showing the win logon page, and sits there black. the mouse can move around, but i get nothing from that point.
i tried using the windows install disk to try and repair it, are there any other suggestions out there? -
order a replacement dell battery. BTW is the windwos 7 a release version or is it a RC? I still don't understand what RTM is.
-
rtm= RELASED TO MANUFACTURING.
its a finsihed version of windows 7x64 7600.1685. -
so how did u get it? i thought windows 7 doesn't come out till october?
-
there are plenty of sites that offer a download for the RTM. the issue is however , getting it licenced properly, which is difficult to do , since like you said it doesnt come out until october. u can use the 30 day trial 3 times for a total of 120 days. i have been lucky enough to come up with another solution for now. send me a private message for more info.
