What do you mean by "plug and play"? You have to install drivers for it to work, but after you do that if you unplug it you can plug it back in and it'll work fine.

Does anyone here have a comparison between this device and the software drivers that can be purchased from Dell with their notebooks?

plug and play (PnP) means... u don't need to install the driver from the cd; when u plug in a device, windows will automatically recognize the device and automatically install a driver for it. u ever use USB thumbdrive? thats a PnP device.

Hy! I've got one and it's the better chooice I've done. The sound is perfect. When I got it, one year ago, I was thinking of this or the pcmcia sound card. Finally I decided the sound blaster Nx and bought a sound sistem 2.1, creative too. You'll need to install drivers that come with the sound card, and if you want to enjoy the remote controller you have to install the creative suite.

Yes, the driver is good. But it will install on your system more than you think. After the instalation if you restart your computer and go to the msconfig and look the system srtup programs, you'll see that creative has intalled some aplications. My system runs well.
I've this installed, but if you move the computer it's normally that you don't have the sound blaster connected, but if you want to connect to your laptop make sure that first is off, after you've got to connect to usb and finally turn on.
I only got a problem and that was using skype. I don't know why when start the computer the sound blaster made an error and in this sesion didn't work, but no problem I desactivate skype.

thanks! it seems this is the same across all creative sound card, even my desktop audigy2 zs (internal) needs to install this extra suite, though i refuse to install creative media player; my worries now is that because the device connects through a USB; it will eat up cpu resources. do u notice any difference in CPU usage when listening to a music or playing games when using the soundcard vs the intergrated one?

Well, I normally didn't notice anything. If I use the sound blaster it's because I want to use the 2.1 speakers, creative too.
I normally put the speed of the processor at 800 mhz that is the minimum for the pentium m, and i didn't notice nothing else.
I was afraid when I bought it if I was buying somthing that after I was going to use never, but now I try to use every day, because the speakers and the sound of the laptop is bad.
If I put the speakers in the headphones conexion of the laptop I notice the diference. Bad diference. So the improve of the sound is big.
As I said above, you have to install the creative suite to enjoy the remote controler, because it didn't work with media player, for example ( the action of turn up and down work because is directly to the sound card).
I'm not sure about the resoruces that it will eat, but sure that little yes.

    oh ok... thanks

oh btw, it seems that the headphone jack of most (if not all) equipment is fragile, so that is why i want to buy this USB Audigy card. the laptop i wanna buy got decent sound quality (QOSMIO G30).

It seems that all your questions have been answered, but just to confirm I'll give my experiences.

You do need to install the driver for it to work at all. It's a very powerful driver though, and if you install everything you can customize it you can get the remote to work with other programs as well. The sound is great, you get awesome sound with both surround speakers and a surround headset. The drivers do add quite a few processes though. With the stuff I installed I think it added like 5 new processes to the startup list. I don't notice a performance decrease, but it's still worth noting.

One thing you should note is that if you have it plugged into the notebook and you're using it if you unplug it Windows doesn't always recognize it and doesn't always let you revert to using the laptop speakers without restarting the system. If you start the system using the integrated, however, and then plug in the sound card it's not a problem.

I love the card though, I have no complaints about it.

I have Audigy 2 NX myself too, it is true that once in a blue moon it won't start properly and you have to reboot the system, but that does not happen often for me.

You do need the driver, and the sound card needs external power supply, but IMHO the sound quality is well worth it.

You can also disable a few Creative services in msconfig if you are really annoyed by those 3 new processes.

thanks that helps a lot, that lift my worries.

THAT add to my worries! lol, so if i boot the system with this unit plugged in and pull it out, i can't get my intergrated speaker to work, correct? and to correct this i need to reboot my system? and if i want to use my intergrated speaker, i need to turn off the computer, unplugged the soundcard and then boot. is that right?

If you have a laptop you can also look audigy 2 ZS laptop. I've got a friend that was wondering if getting the NX or ZS finally he decided the ZS because the saving space because is more compact.
You put it in the pcmcia slot an that's it. I has some cables with all the connections you needed. An the best solution for mobility because it doesn't need a power suply.
The price of ZS is similar, I think that a little more. But as said above the quality sound worth it.
If you go to sound blaster web site, you can compare this sound cards and you wil realise that ZS has some better features.

Sometimes it will work, sometimes it doesn't, but yes, to get the integrated sound working again if it isn't working all you'll need to do is reboot. If you power down, unplug, and then reboot it will work perfectly, yes.
