Well, for anybody who cares, Crucial has finally released their own version of the latest Indilinx Barefoot firmware.

    M225 2030 firmware update - Crucial Community

The process seems to be non-destructive, but nevertheless do not hesitate to back up your important files if you decide to update.

On the other hand, if your drive has been running without issue (this is likely the case for most users), then perhaps you do not need to update.

This firmware fixes some pretty serious issues like "drive disappearing" or too optimistic wear cycle counts. So actually it's a good idea to update even if drive operating well at the moment.

Yes, the reported Maximum P/E Count Specification dropped from 10,000 to 5,000 like I expected. (at least it didn't drop to 3000 which was what I was really worried about) However, I never experienced the drive disappearing issue which I believe occurs on the chipset that is paired with the Intel i3/5/7 CPUs.

I did own a M225 CT256 at one point, as a secondary drive, and it kept on disappearing on me. This was a PM45 chipset, an Asus G51vx.

I spoke with their tech support, and she concluded that it was a bad drive, (interestingly, she had the same laptop herself), but now I wonder, haha.

Hmm... Now I wonder since my laptop's got the GM45 chipset. (equivalent to PM45 with integrated graphics core)
