I can only afford the 64 gig, and I just want to use it as a boot/windows/applications drive and leave my main 500 gig for my data ..

    I have Alienware m17x r3 with sata III ..

which one of them will be more reliable and faster ..??

    M4 Spec:

    Sustained Sequential Read
    Up to 500 MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s)

    Sustained Sequential Write
    Up to 95 MB/s (SATA 6Gb/s)

    4KB Random Read
    Up to 45,000 IOPS

    4KB Random Write
    Up to 20,000 IOPS

    MTBF
    1,200,000 hours

    830 Spec:

    Max Sequential Read
    Up to 520 MB/s

    Max Sequential Write
    Up to 160 MB/s

    4KB Random Read
    Up to 75,000 IOPS

    4KB Random Write
    Up to 16,000 IOPS

    MTBF
    1,500,000 hours

as far as I can understand the Samsung is better .. why everybody is recommending the M4 ??!!

I think because the M4 is available for a long time and many have used it while the 830 was just released and aside from press review, no real world performance impressions available yet.

But the 830 come with free game Arkham City so you could either play or sell it for cash ;)

    Without reliability speed doesn't matter.

The M4 is the better choice right now if you want SSD speeds AND known reliability.

As already mentioned, the unproven Samsung 830's speed advantage doesn't mean a thing with it's untested (in real world) usage status.

If you need to buy now; buy the M4 and update it to Firmware 009 for the best performance and reliablity.

If you can wait a few weeks/months; the 830 may give you better performance than the M4 along with the reliabilty you need (assuming that reliability is proven with many users), but by then, there will be other SSD models to lure us. ;)

These are results of my 256gb 830 ssd:

I'm very, very happy with the real world performance of the 830. I'm not saying the Crucial M4 is poor but Samsung have an excellent reputation for making reliable hardware and if the 830 is half as good as its predecessor, the 470 series, then the 830 ssd currently beats all the non-sandforce drives out there.

I think Samsung already proven their reliability track record with the 470 series. The 470 has a stellar reliability record besting even Intel.

The 830 series is a faster version of that with new controller and firmware.

There's price to factor in too. I would say they are about equal and you should look for the best price you can get on either drive. The key thing to remember is that any SSD will mop the floor with a standard 7200RPM hard drive.

Here is a comparison of the disks (both in 64GB size and in bigger variations).
    They recommend the Samsung 830.

why, what's so useful in magician? The only thing i really liked was option for very easy overprovisioning, other than that I haven't found anything useful really.

btw, do you notice how old this topic is? :D

Magician is useful for those who want to quickly apply OS optimizations and use the one's recommended by the manufacturer. As well, it allows you to give an active TRIM command if you feel it's necessary
