Looks like Crucial are acting quickly on this issue and will be releasing a firmware fix
Fix coming
Hopefully this solves the issue and I wont regret buying a non-Intel drive

So they installed a timebomb which goes off after 5200 hours rendering the ssd useless? Good job!
-- -
What the...man what kind of bug is this! Though i doubt many have got to such amount yet.
-
5200 hr Nuke huh...seems I have roughly 4000 hrs left and counting.
....I'll BOLO for an update from Crucial.
Tks OP for this info. We'll see what comes of this. -
does it seem to be affecting 256GB/128GB models? most of the complaints seem to be concerning 64GB models. -
-
Nahh, I still love my M4. And I just started using it so I'm guessing by the time I get to 5000 hours or so, we're gonna be at firmware 0999 lol
-
Aye! I bought my pair in september and even assuming i put the laptop on 24/7 which i did not i still got about 200 days left. Plenty of time for a fix eh?
-
I'm guessing about a year or so from first boot. Hope I remember to update before I reach 5000 hours though lol
-
-
I for one searched long and researched hard on what SSD to get, and after reading tons of reviews (real-world performance, benchmarks, reliability, price, etc.), I decided to get the M4 and I still believe it is the best choice in the market of SSDs today.

M4 firmware 0309 is now available - Crucial Community
New firmware 0309 fixes the 5000 hour bug. You can get it now... -
I'll be applying the fix monday, my cds are at uni so i'll burn the iso on monday and apply the fix.
-
anyone got any trouble installing the new firmware using a flash drive? Mine got stuck after selecting default/alternate with something about initdrives not enough caches or something. Tried various methods from google to no avail. To the point I am thinking of getting a portable optical drive just for this.
-
I ordered a M4 128GB yesterday when it arrives should I install firmwares 0002 - 0309 in increments or just go straight to firmware 0309?

How to Create Bootable Flash Drives | eHow.com
Hopefully after that, you can copy the contents of the .iso to the drive and try to manually install the firmware
Late addition...found this on another website...

you can go straight to 0309
here is what im talking about, a wall of text:
@Bobmitch: thank you for your effort, i did tried that storagereview post first. I will rep you as soon as I am able again.
edit: got it done by plug in both the drives and flash drive into another computer. Strange that it did not work on my laptop.

Having updated the firmware on my M4 this morning, I have noticed that my system is noticeably snappier (ie: less laggy).
Hope this keeps up. -
Any increases in performance vs. FW 0009?
I'm at 535MB/s read and 200MB/s write based on ATTO right now w/FW 0009. Another increase would definitely prove my point that the M4 is the best SSD out there. lol
-
I noticed this bug last night as all of a sudden my M18x started randomly freezing/BSOD. I applied the firmware fix but I am still noticing problems..
-
-
In safe mode everything works fine but once I boot up normally it begins micro stuttering and eventually locks up/BSOD within 20-30 seconds of initial start up. Any ideas?
-
How old is your M18x? -
Just updated my M4 to FW 0309 and benched on ATTO. Performance seems to be almost the same as 0009 except for a very slight 2-5MB/s increase in write..I guess the new firmware was more of a bug fix than another breakthrough. No biggie, I couldn't possibly for anything more from my M4 lol.
-
Read the changelog. It is a small patch for a single bug. Nothing more, nothing less.
-
anyway u shouldnt put SSDs in raid cos u don't have trim and your SSD will degenerate .. -
I know and am aware of the issue and still waiting for the legendary 11.5 RST driver from intel. However i put modt of my data onto the mechanical drive and most of the temporary files there too so the issue for now is at least minimized. -
SSDs manuf they will start making SSDs later on with trim supports in RAID 0 -
Because intel RST is not exclusively for intel ssd. They have another app for that.
-
thnx -
7.6 cpu, 7.9 hdd and 7.8 for the rest. If you need a screenshot you will have to wait till later.
-
I was hoping that I will get 7.6 for CPU ..
Will do re-run again ..
-
-
I just updated it via DVD nice and smooth
tried USB but didn't boot couldn't mess with it so i burned disc ...
But I never had problems even with 0002 or 0009 al same ... -

and just a hint to those that installed your M4's with SATA in raid mode...when you run boot from the cd, the M4 install app will not be able to find your M4. i had to temporarily change my SATA to AHCI, then the firmware update works great.
THen, i had to change it back to raid mode -
Updated my two M4s last night, everything went fine. Found some CD-RWs to burn the iso. I haven't seen any change in benchmarks on my laptop.
-
-
I only benched the laptop on battery. I shouldn't, i know so i'll run again plugged in and on the desktop just to make sure. Small variation on the desktop, but nothing to write home about mostly, about 40MB/s increase in 4kQD32 reads though.

Others have reported problem updating from USB, have you tried burning the iso to a disc, so far the disc method never failed me.
-
i couldnt get it to work either so if you no longer have an optical drive like me your best bet is to get another laptop or desktop to flash the new firmware.

I can confirm that updating the firmware via USB did not work for me. i tried different things but i had to go back to burning the iso to a cd and booting from it.
Also, the update only works if your SATA mode is AHCI, so if you installed your drive in RAID, switch to AHCI temporarily, boot from cd, do the update, then switch back to RAID after and boot from SSD -
Technically, the update should work in IDE mode too. I haven't tried it though.
