Hey fellas, I currently have a C300 64GB in my M17X-R3 right now. I just found a great deal on an M4 64GB and went ahead and purchased it. I was just planning to use it as my new boot drive (considering it is faster than my C300) and having my C300 for more storage space but then the idea of RAIDing them dawned on me.

Would this be possible? What kind of speeds can I expect if I RAID them together in RAID0? How would I go about installing the OS/RAIDing them?

I don't really know too much about the subject so any advice would be great!

it should is possible to raid0 2 disks of different speed. You can expect sequential speeds of about 2x slower disk. You basically configure raid in your bios and after that system sees two disks as one.

Double the speed of my slower SSD (C300) is better than nothing! 330MB*2 is better than nothing!

yes and no, as is for now you loose trim, and that's not good with such small capacity drives. Though 11.5 version of intels rst drivers are announced to bring it even to raid0.

Currently it would be better if you'd buy single 128gb m4 and sold old c300 and ended up at same amount of money spent but that's over now. :)

    just enjoy your disks! :)

What type of controller is in your laptop? SATA II or SATA III. I guess it doesn't matter as both are SATA III, with the C300 only being slightly slower on certain benches. You should be fine in that regard.

For RAID-0 over SSDs, there are some "gotchas" that most ppl are not aware of (like increasing the chances of losing data stored on the drive or as ivan_cro just mentioned the loss of TRIM on Win 7). If you do some research and get up to speed of the problems, you can make the call from there.

Thanks for the information guys. I was highly considering just selling my C300 and buying another M4 to match the one I have already bought. I was thinking to myself, "600MB read vs.1000MB read", it's pretty obvious which one I should go with. However, after reading more into it, even double the speeds isn't really that noticeable in everyday use. I don't do anything hardcore like ripping DVDs so I myself would probably not notice. I think a C300+M4 would more than be enough in terms of speed for me.

SSDs are just too fast now :p. Once you hit the kind of random 4K read/write speeds that we are now seeing in almost every current offering, there just isn't a point to anything higher end. Raw sequential performance is nice but, again, it is to the point that more performance for more money just isn't worth it -- there are other bottlenecks in the system to worry about now.
